Question Anyone done the Gisborne loop - SH35+SH2?

Hey Bikers. Has anyone done the Gisbourne loop - SH35 and SH2 ?

From looking on Google Maps It seems as a nice peace of road.
    I'm wondering the following:

Is has it got heaps of twisties ?
Are the roads in good condition?
Are there gravel sections or is it all sealed?
How many Km is the whole loop?
Can it be done in ONE day from point to point - say Gisbourne back to Gisbourne?

    Cheers All

If you are talking about Opotiki round the cape to Gisborne and back to Opotiki via the Waioeka Gorge...then yes, it is sealed the whole way (barring roadworks).
Twistie heaven and lots of us have done it. I think it is about 500kms and can be done in a day. You will know you've had a decent ride tho...
Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?

Plenty have, I am not one of them. I have done Opotiki to Gisbone via the cape, and Gisborne to Opotiki via the Gorge, jus tnot the same trip.

    Yes Plenty of twisties
Road is in Reasonable condition apart from small patches.
Sealed all the way apart from road works patches, unless you choose to do the bit from TeAraroa to the light house at East cape (that bit is gravelled).
from Memory 320 Km from Opotiki to Gisborne via East Cape, 140 via Waioeka Gorge, therefore 460 ish sounds fair (note google maps just told me 465km).
Fuel available at Opotiki, Te Araroa, Ruatoria (slight detour), Tologa bay and Gisborne (all of those on weekdays) not sure how you would fair on Saturday afternoon or Sunday at the smaller places.

Certainly do-able as a day trip. I'm going to do Tauranga to Tauranga via East cape & Gisborne one day.

Note the spelling of Gisborne (no u)

    Enjoy.

I'd love to do this route sometime in the near future. I've got friends in Gisborne who are overdue for a visit. Any good places to stop if you don't wanna do the whole trip at once?

Brian's Place in Tokamaru Bay is absolute tops! If you are a BBH member it only costs $25 a night and the facilities are great, simple, but great. the people (Brian and Liz) are absolutely top notch.

We spent 3 nights there after Christmas and if we hadn't got other commitments would have stayed for our full two week holiday.

For another opinion though I found the road really tedious, non stop twisties, BUT, I was in the the 'cage', and it has less horsepower than my bike! 64/68! The surface was very, very patchy though so enjoy, but be careful, the nearest ambulance is bloody hours away!

I'm tempted to join in on this. I live near whakatane - folks are welcome to overnight here on the way through. Theres a couch and a double airbed, a trampoline out back, and plenty of grass lol.
