This cop is a fucker and is well known amongst the biking fraternity...trust me, it will eat him up inside that he was unable to get me on anything that sticks...he was annoyed enough that i wasn't speeding and thats why I believe he gave me a ticket for the plate and rear reflector. I will ensure he knows what I think of him as we are leaving the court room.

Besides, I am doing it for myself along with everyone else who has a 'non standard' mounting system for their plates....If I sent in the photos trying to get the cops to drop the fine, I wouldn't have the satisfaction of seeing the wanker after it was thrown out of court now would i, so I figure by doing it this way I get personal satisfaction... also, I will ask the court for some confirmation of the outcome in writing in case any other stupid twat tries to tell me its not legal.

    Rego plate lighting

down-load entire motorcycle WOF section here

Somewhere on the LTSA site there will be plate clarity notes.

I did discover that a motorcycle may not exceed 1 metre in width - there are a few Harleys with super wide handle bars in CHCH that would not meet this!

Careful. Could lock you up for offensive/obscene/insulting language or the like... The court is a public place.

I was thinking more like holding my hand like I'm holding a bottle of coke and moving it upwards and then downwards and then upwards and then downwards and then...

Is their any law stating that the plate must be mounted on the back of the vehicle? or that is must just be visible from the back of the vehicle?

Yeah. It describes how the plate should be contructed and attached. Includes it having a light etc

Hasn't taken up any of my time yet patrick...Well no more of my time than yours cause all I have done thus far is winged about this type of cop on this here forum.

When I posted "well its off to court for me" I was referring to a letter I have now received from the cops stating that they were going to continue pursuing the infringement against me and waste the courts time...well appart from the last part, that was the gist of the letter. I'm not due to go to court until next month...if the date is suitable to me that is.

I wondered about doing that with my plate with the tail tidy on my bike. I thought I can't be bothered with the hassle...'cause it was always going to be one! Number plate light was going to be a drama. At least the tail light pretends to illuminate mine.

Guess I'll have to put a red strip on the number plate to prevent a similar experience.

    FFS!?
I can see his point. It is harder to read than the optimum placement and I can see that it is also vulnerable to getting covered up with muddy water from the rear tyre.

The road code says (pg 159 current edition) you must have "in good working condition."

"A red reflector at the back."
"One or more red position lights and a white number plat light at the back"

By good working condition you would presume that the white light should light up the number plate. Does yours?

    ...and on page 156

"In addition to the warrant of fitness , a motorcycle must display a current licence label and a number plate on the back that can be clearly seen."

However I am surprised you didn't just get some friendly advice to better position it.

    wot a wanker

If youve got a warrant with the plate mounted as it is, he should be investigating where you got a warrant, not issuing you a ticket. Just print the photos and post in your appeal, it costs you nothing unless they want to go to court over it.
It's a shame when cops get all pedantic about little shit like that. some little old lady was probably gettn robbed while he was on his power trip
