    Questions - new guy to motorbike scene

    Heya guys/girls.
    I have a few questions that seem a little hard to google up on, if you wouldn't mind giving me a hand.

    1. I'm looking at buying a bike from wellington, and as I am situated in Auckland, how does one go about changing the ownership of it? Or if it even needs to be done. (Read, i'm 17 and have no clue about the paperwork of this fangdangle information ages ways.)

    2. Upon sitting a practical license for my learners plates, what exactly will they be looking out for? Is it just the basics of the clutch, braking, balance etc?
    Hopefully my old KDX200 will give me a leg up!

    7. I heard on the radio that some poobums are thinking about imposing a horsepower restriction to learner riders. I know 250's aren't exactly slouches, but you know them 'fficials. I ask, how solid is this law, is it just a big thought, or a real-soon thing? How long do I have to get my license!?

    And that's all I think I couldn't find out.
    OH OH! Besides being a tightarse, why would one go down the route of textile gear as opposed to full leather? I could never come up with more than nicer in the summer.

    not sure about number one, but the basic skills test is just that... pretty basic. They are just checking if you can keep the thing upright while turning, stopping and making emergency stops (the emergency stop at my test was more of a sedate slowing down, you have aaaagges to come to a stop). Regarding 7?? those laws won'e be sorted out for the next few years even I would guess and then they will take even longer to come into force so you should be happily on your full by then . Oh and I just remembered about number one, you can get the form from your postshop or your wof centre for changing ownership.

    Better textile jackets can be much more waterproof and warmer than some leather jackets but with tech now days just get whatever is most comfortable for you and you should be alright.

    Reading what you have written and looking at spelling/punctuation etc i'll flag No. 1 . Educated bloke like you will figure it out !
    No 2 will be mmm more difficult, practical or learners ? If your doing your practical you will be tested on most/all of the above, but should have your L plate !
    No 7 ( spelling and punctuation was great, but i'm worried about yr maths here) Not familiar with the KDX but pretty sure you wont have a problem with the new power to weight ratio they are bringing in ! (back to No 2, you could wait till the end of the year and do your learners on a 600 cc if it comes in by then)

    Textile ? by that do ya mean Kevlar or the like ? Personally i find its too bloody hot in the summer ! Good set of riding leathers with vents are cooler, but then too cool in winter hence owning both leather and kevlar !

    Ownership is changed as easy as going to the post office.Decades since i had to do the license practical but i imagine they will be looking for at least some signs of competence.Textile v leather is purely a personal thing i reckon,after 30 odd years riding ive ended up with leather pants and codura jacket so go figure,if your doing long trips in the wet leather gear gets very wet and takes a bit to dry,easy fix is to put a pullover wet weather jacket under the seat,whatever you buy make sure its got armour in it,all the skin in the world is great but if you have a smashed knee cap or elbow etc its kind of pointless.

    I figured it wasn't going to be a full on 'you must get at least a bronze on the 0-100m in 5 seconds, GO!' jobbie, but one does wish to know these things anyhow.
    Living in a world with Murphies law and all, I read that they are going to impose a 150kw/tonne limit by about 2010, 'hopefully'. For the greater good, I guess. I was more worried about, but forgot to actually write, that if I was holding a learners when they passed it through, would I have to downgrade. *Imaginary tear*. Being a dirtbike-raised kid, all I know are 'gumboots and sweatshirt or else' gears. I guess it'll be easy to find out what i'll like when I get a chance to try 'em out.
    As for the more posts, I'll reside there more often in any case =) Just needed a couple questions answered.

    Educated I r is. Dropping out of 5th form and all.
    Never got to take a trip with mum-mum or dad-ad to wherever/whatever changed the owners details.

    Maths! It was the only thing I passed really well in school! Maybe er. My finger slipped. KDX is a Kwakka dirt bike, (Enduro 2-stroke single 200. Light as buggery). I do plan (More or less will, or else i'll be rightly annoyed) to get a gsf250. Love 'em.

    As for the material, Something warm on an unfaired bike might be nice =)

    Rather than downgrade, you'd be able to upgrade. Looking at Australia's list of approved bikes that meet the spec, it is all 250s except for a couple of two strokes, and most bikes under 650cc. You just won't be able to an R6 or GSXR600 (or similar) as a learners bike.

    Sweet. So just signed confirmations from both parties? Don't want some bugger flagging me down for a paid-for, stolen bike. As ultimately unlikely as it is, yeah.

    I'm pretty damn sure i'll have competence. Forests kill those who lack it. As do 1.5 tonne pieces of moving metal.

    Armour looks cool in any situation. Limpet-like hard plastic, who'd have thought?! But don't worry, I ride my pushbike with a fullface MX-Style helmet.

    But... Isn't... New Zealand has a 250cc learner block, dunnit?
    Then to 500cc upon holding the restricted?

    Top 600's will probably make me do pooze and look way more appealing than I am already. SWEET!

    If ya have the coin to do yr learners now, most BHS outfits have the bikes there for ya do do the course on, so ya don't have to wait for the bike to get it underway !
    Picking ya wont be able to use the KDX as they have to be road legal etc but the sooner ya get things underway the better !
    And like Jantar said, if they do change the learners laws you will be able to upgrade to a larger bike by the sound of things, unless your up and running with a full licence by then !

    Ah, KDX wouldn't be too bad, perfect gearing for not loosing license, but a little too plush, and maintenance isn't nice.

    Just to make sure that you do understand.

    At present New Zealand has a 250 cc limit for both Learners and restricted. The proposed new law will replace that 250 cc limit with a power to weight limit of 150 kw/tonne. The weight is the combined weight of bike and an assumed weight for the rider. There will still be an overall limit of 650 cc.

    Dont try to achieve too much too quickly on your bike when you get one (respect that it can be a lethal weapon) and you might just make it to middle age like some of us old farts...
