Oh, nothing, I got distracted by another shapely lass, in the form of an exchange student from Canada. I need to learn to be more single-minded. Still, easy come easy go.
Sounds like you better hurry! John (Reporting I mean)

Well, the taste is actually not that bad. Problem is when you drink the stuff straight it kinda makes your tummy feel weird...

Legislation is under way to ban fun once and for all - don't worry. We'll all be much happier!

I don't think that was the laudanum though - pretty sure that was due to methanol. Distilling stuff to 85% alc/vol. does carry some risk of getting methanol traces in there with it...

Put her on the table with a couple of shot glasses.

Then break out something that can be drunk in large quantities, beer or bourbon, Between each drink have a shot of Absinthe.

Nothing to be scared of, and nothing particularly amazing about the drink.

The top brew is 89.9% which is about as close to methenol as you want to get.Had a bottle at my wife's 40th with compulsory nips as people came through the door.Better then fancy dress as a party starter.
Quite a few of the more "creative" writers of the late 19th century drank it because of it's blow you away ability.

There is absinthe and then there's absinthe. Stength can vary wildely and the brands aren't well known. Generally the very expensive stuff is absolute rocket fuel. I'd recommend a quiet look at it before the full assault.

Eh, I'm not sure if I follow what you mean about 89.9% being as close to methanol as you want to get.

You can quite happily distill ethanol (the thing that gets you drunk while retaining your sight and some bits of health) up to about 96 vol.%. After that you need to add "stuff that is worse for you" (TM).
Problem with methanol is that it can form during distillation if the parameters are not controlled precisely. For more info wikipedia is a good place to start.

But yeah, it was quite popular in the arty circles in Paris back in the day.

Yes, in the good old days it contained a fair amount of Wormwood - related to Nightshade - which has an amount laudanum (IIRC) which is a fairly active hallucinogenic neuro toxin.

Alas, these days you won't find a Absinthe brewed on wormwood - those that contain some only does so in very small doses.
No, laudanum is Tincture of Opium. Quite hamless. The poisonous neurotoxin in wormwood is thujone.

Definitely ethanol. It used to be 190 proof - 95% alchohol.
