That intersection is a shocker for red light runners. On a good day you'll see at least one every phase. I guess all you can do at the moment is anticicipate (like you have) and try not to be collected

If you are number one to get off the mark always look right, then look left, then look right again. Do this as the lights are in AMBER for the lane that has the right of way. You can check this by moving up a bit and looking at their light colour. It gives you an overview of what is happening at the intersection. And as you are moving off, check your left again. Works every time. Stay safe!!!!!!!!

If you're splitting up between a set of two lanes to a red light and it goes green when you're a car or two back DO NOT gas it so you lead through the intersection. Leaves you no time (or visibility due to the cages) to check for red runners.

Better plan is to fall in behind the front car on either side then split past them after the intersection. If anyone gets taken out it'll be the cages not you.

pfft!! Last night on my way home from a late shift I got a green and took a second extra to get going as I was in a day (9pm at night) dream and a muffi cop ran the red!!! I followed him all the way from Plimmerton-Porirua to the Paraparaumu police station. Was doing 105-120km/h the whole way, passing without indicating!! Couldn't believe it. I got all the details, car model and plate... not sure if I'll bother with a complaint becuase the truth is it will fall on deaf ears... odds are he'll get my details and wait for me on my daily commute and be a pick... funny thing is next year running a red will get you 75 demerits... that cop will be driving a desk at that rate.

Pretty much exaclty what I did.

People running reds isn't really a new thing but this was just so damn close for me. I was up front, had been sitting there about 1 min watched the lights go orange got ready to zip off on the green, looked right and left started to take off.....and then for some reason I actually stopped and looked right again and this prick roars through.

Must of been a good 3-4 secs after they went green for me that he came through so it wasn't like he ran a orange light it would of been solid red.

constellation drive turing up to the new police station the cops do it all the time now lights go orange when they are a good 100 mtrs out from lights dont enen try to stop just sail round the corner which is fully red before they get there i only live 300mtr further up the road so see this nearly every second day. Of course there are some who flick on the lights if they are red just so every one has to stop to let them through just so they can get back to the station with out stopin.

Yup....funny thing was I was going down pages Rd today (CHCH) and this prick pulled out straight in front of me from a gas station...he wasnt indicating and I had to slam on the anchors....and a cop saw the whole thing....copper just kept on driving by. Not even 500 meters down the road a bitch in a red hatchback pulled out in front of me from the softball grounds..Emergency braking test #2...Oh...I was in a cage so think they shoulda seen me. NZ Drivers are fucking pathetic!

Just a thought here, but could the lights be programed so that when one direction goes from amber and then onto red, then they have a built in delay of say 10 seconds before the other direction gets their green light to proceed?
This would mean that any red light runners would have passed through the intersection and would probably avoid a collision.
Too simple i guess so probably won't happen.

Good idea, except people would cotton on to it and just run the red lights for up to 10 seconds longer.

Sure. For about a day. Then the red light runners just get to know that they have 10 seconds longer (and will have to wait for 10 seconds doing absolutely nothing but stew if they do stop). I'd rather see slightly longer oranges (so there's absolutely no excuse for running the red), with about half a second gap between the red and the opposing green - and cameras, with big fines.

Heh, happened once when I was with my FXR150, at night crossing Quay street near Foodtown. Green light, I had a habbit to open full throttle after a change of light, so off I go, but all of a sudden, never happened before, my bike coughs, a bit slows down, my reaction - damn, service needed, and just 1 meter in front of me from the left van running red on about 60-70km. Damn, someone looked after me that night.

Report it. Shit driving is still shit driving, no matter who is at the wheel.

See them all the time especially when I'm waiting to go onto Nelson street from the NW Motorway. They're always running through that intersection particularly from the left (Union St). I wouldn't call them close calls for me, cause I'm always on hyper watch for them whatever intersection I'm going through.

Red light runners fuck me off no end. Walking to school in the mornings I cross Victoria St in Hamilton CBD, and every morning I wait for a second when the crossing turns green because some cunt always runs the red. If I didn't, you'd have been picking me out of bumpers numerous times.

I'm sorely tempted to take a notepad with me in the mornings, write down the licence plates and hand them into the police each afternoon when I get off.
Who, me? I just wander from thread to thread.

Perhaps counters like the ones in Queen Street... so there's no guessing the period of time that the orange will be lit, then if you cross the line when it's red, you're ticketed... no excuses, no ambiguity, and none of this police crap like it went red when you reached the middle of the intersection.
