Pongy helmet syndrome

I can wash the liner and cheek pads from my helmet but it still smells so bad that I want to heave when I put it on.

I've tried rinsing of the inside of the shell and polystyrene liner with warm soapy water but its getting so bad I may have to buy a new helmet.

You'll recognize me on trail rides because of the clouds of flies circling my helmet.

you know that you're going too fast when the corks hit your goggles. Also an excellent way of telling if you are going uphill or downhill (angle of the dangle)

tried spraying some of the stuff we use to depong our toilet in it. It didnt work - just made me feel like someone had taken a dump in it

Good call, sounds a bit past std stench, I use ~5-1 liquid washing detergent on my bike, so did a couple of spray/leave/wash out cycles on the inside of my helmet the other day & it did a pretty good job of cleaning up the smell.

have you tried washing your head?

make sure the liner is complety dry before you put it back in.

Last time I did a face plant there was lots of poo - but it wasnt in my helmet

Yeah been through this a while back. Nothing i could find, bleach, dettol, disenfactant, would change the smell. It smelled so bad that I think cat piss would have improved it some. I bought a new one...

How old is the helmet? Perhaps the liner and what's underneath are starting to perish a bit because of sweat etc and it's past the point of no return? The suggestion about bacteria is quite likely.

You could try sprinkling the inside with baking soda (or sitting a bowl of it in there) and leaving for a few days. Baking soda is great for absorbing odours (great for stinky boots too).

There is a product called Nilodor. Been a while since I used it but Mum swore by it. I think you added a few drops into the washing water and it gave a nice smell rather than a stinky pong, or you could sprinkle a few drops (but beware, I remember it is very very strong). Pic attached, but I think these days it also comes in a spray form. It's often available at pet stores (as it's good for removing various pet smells), otherwise maybe chemist.
