Had an IT250 that did exactly the same thing after putting a 2nd hand stator in it without fitting the matching flywheelran as sweet as a nut, took it out for it's first run fired it up knocked it into 1st dropped the clutch and smoked the wheel up in reverse
those that saw it happenbastards!

A common problem back in the early days with two-strokes! If one kicked back on starting, it could run backwards. Four-strokers can't, of course. Especially the old Yamaha DT250's and 500's would do it quite readily!
