VFR400 Shitter decisions

Hey guys/gals

Looking for some advice to help me tip the scales here.
I've just bought a VFR400 NC21 with the original intention of making it into a track bike. Now I've got it in front of me and had a really good look at it, I'm not really sure that it's a suitable platform for such an endevour - that and the racing season appears to have just finished or something, all the track bikes are suddenly coming up for sale.

Anyhow. She's a bit of a minter
- Front brakes are rooted, needs new discs for sure
- Ignition key is a screwdriver
- Petrol cap has no key, just a PK screw holding it down
- Gear lever, clutch lever, and one footpeg are broken
- Tyres are some asian brand I've never heard of, but still have good tread

Now I'm having a bit of a quandry. I don't think she'll be much of a track bike even if I were to fix everything and put good tyres on etc. She's deregistered, so if I were to put her back on the road I would have to VIN her. I dunno if maybe I should just get rid of it for what I can get and take the loss like a man...

I've never had the engine running - batterie's flat and so is my motivation at this point - but it cranked over a couple of times and it seems to have 4 even compressions. Seller claimed it ran.

So. Anyone want to buy an NC21 shitter? Or have some sage advice on what the hell I should do with it? It owes me two grand at the moment, but I don't expect I shall ever see that again.

My advice? Learn from your mistake. It's harsh, I know, and I'm sure you've already beaten yourself up about it... but it really sounds as though you've bought it without getting it thoroughly checked out first, and it's turned out to be a lemon. So, learn from this. Any time you purchase a bike, know exactly what it's like and pay the right price.

It sounds as though it's pretty ratty. If you can fix some of the more obvious stuff cheaply and get it running (borrow a battery first, don't buy one unless it's fine with the borrowed one!), you can sell it on and not lose too much money. Probably best to sell it on or you may come to hate the sight of it before too long, making you sick and reminding you of your mistake.

Good luck either way though... there are probably some KBers near you who can help you out.

Hmm, yeah I tend to agree. I bought it on a punt (it was in chch, I'm in auckland...) and it's a bit worse than I thought it was. Really, I guess it's only the brakes that I didn't know about, but that's a pretty expensive item to have "forgotten" to mention.

Oh well.
I'm picking it's probably worth about a grand to the right person in it's current state. I guess I'll just put it back up on tardme and see how I do.

Get some second hand discs ( i think the nc21 disc's are easy to find than nc30 ) and shove them on and then at least you have a running bike you could sell and make a profit on even you never know. After finding all the parts ( i bet you could get them all mail ordered from that big wreckers in chch ) it would probably only be a days work.

Yeah, not worried about the amount of work involved, it's a piece of piss really. I'm just a bit cagey about throwing more money at something that's probably not worth it.

I agree.Everything you mentioned on the your list, would be on the list if you binned it on the track.E.mail a wrecker with your list and ask how much.

Hell man .... ya buy a bike as a track special and the sole intention of doing a bit of racing . So whats changed ??? dont you like the colour ? Just get it track ready and if you dont like it at least you can sell it as a track ready bike and replace it with something else later. I assume you have done some racing in the past , if not then do you really know you will like it ?. Small steps at a time .
From reading your post all you have to do is get a set of tyres and secure the fuel cap,get a s/hand footpeg.
PS; dont forget to take a screwdriver to the track like a lot of us for the ignition .
After that your ready so to speak, just do it .

An NC21 will be sweet in Pre-89's. There's at least 1 I know of in there. Tidy it up a little and go play. At a grand you can afford to crash it plenty (which you will cos you're new to the track).

Well, if those facts doesn't yell TRACKBIKE! I don't know what would.

First get a battery, start her up and have a listen. Go from there...

Thanks for all the encouragement guys, but I've made a better investment I think - got myself a nice ZXR400 that's all done for the money that it'll cost me to get this thing finished.

So she's up on tardme. To be honest, I realised that whilst I have the knowledge and the tools to prep the Viffer, I don't actually have the time or the patience. So yeah, if anyone wants a cheap shitter, I'm going to take a big loss on this one I think.

Great work zxrs are way better(although I got passed by vfrs today)
They're an awesome bike, but hard to tune/set up right so I have found(doing it back yard style).
