I havent used one myself but I wouldnt pay $140 odd for something you can build for under $20 from dse.

Currently I am building something that will allow me to alternate between my mp3 player and cellphone so I can take calls on the road without having to stuff a phone into my visor

cost so far=0$ working=yes

and yeah like I said, another $20 (max) components from dickies and youve got a coms unit as well.

I've got one of them, its changed carrying a pillion for me forever. The system works quite well, you need to have your visor down to stop the wind noise, but otherwise its quite good. There's seperate volumnes for each earpiece, and the clarity isnt too bad, even at motorway speeds (and above) you can clearly hear what your passenger is saying. The batteries seem to last well, I have been using the same batteries for probably around 30 hours so far, no sign what soever of them dying at this stage.

The only thing to bear in mind is that it is a cheap set. We got a bit enthusiastic pulling on the cables and managed to break the connection inside the plug shortly after we got it. I was in Napier at the time, so just went into a Dick Smith store and got a replacement one - unit still works, but every now and again it picks up signal noise from the bikes engine, which can be a bit annoying. However, this is more to do with my dodgy as repair job than a reflection on the unit. Kitt (at SportsbikesNZ) offered to replace the unit despite the fact I had butchered it, which was very good of him - I havent taken him up on it because I just need to spend 10 mins sorting it myself with a soldering iron. I just leave it plugged in with the leads taped up for the moment and its doing the job until I have the time and inclination to sort it out.

For what you pay for it, its really a bargin. Just be careful with the plugs (or better yet, replace them with some new ones that can pull straight up and out if you put too much pressure on them). And one other note, the ear pieces are a little uncomfortable when you are removing your helmet so you need to support the ear peice and lift the lid with care, plus they tend to leave a small dent on your check from where the helmet padding presses the mic boom into it. These are only small niggles though, all in all its a fantastic system.

Also be aware that once you have used an intercom system, never again will you be content to carry a pillion without one.

We had one on a Harley and wifey said she can do without it. It seems I was activating the Vox when cursing stupid cagers - she got full benefit.

Funny - my other half says having an intercom is the last thing he wants.

Reckons one of the best things about touring 2-up on a bike is that he can't hear what I'm saying - probably because it will be along the lines of "slow down you bastard" or "can we stop soon - my bum is sore"

If you are perfectly happy holding a conversation with your pillion - get one.

I use the rider to pillion from PHS it was about $100 or something. Fits well in a helmet and don't have to much trouble hearing at high speed. Batteries last a while. Only down side you can't plug and MP3 or cell phone in.

Yea I have one of those, I didn't pay that much for it though, got it secondhand. The intercom works well but one problem i find with it is the ear pieces are small and tend to fall out inside my helmet.

Check out Johnnyflash's thread on the Blueant Interphone's. We've had our for a little while now and they're working great.

I use the Nolan N102 helmets with the wired intercom. Very good, easy to use, has made a fantastic difference to riding with my son. Bluetooth is an option, but quite expensive. If you already have helmets that aren't compatible, I've heard good things about blueant, and understand that a version 2 is being released later this year.

Go for a better quality product that will last rather than something that will crap out relatively quickly.

WE had a PHS mototalkie unit(is for sale if anyone interested) which you can plug in cell phone, ipod, and bike too bike. Got fed up with all the wires, so upgraded to baehr units on my and wifes bike, much better units and I think worth the price. One on trade me at the moment
