Steering lock not working?

Just wondering if anyone might know the cause of this. I've just bought a 1999 ZX-6R (G2), and I can't get the steering lock to work. Phoenixgtr, who also owns one of these, can't get it to go either - the key just won't turn around to the left past "off". I've tried the wheel full lock left and right, and sorta wiggled it around a bit, but it still won't go. It's annoying, I'm a bit worried about parking the bike anywhere for fear of someone walking off with it, so I'd quite like to fix this little niggle.

Anyone know what it might be? Cheers.

Hope not! It can be hard to move the key from 'off' to 'on' sometimes too...

In other news: Have taken the front calipers apart and cleaned them out, replaced the pads and bled the lines... it seemed to have practically no brake fluid in it! The pads weren't too badly worn, but replaced the lot anyway. Stops much better now.

It's dying. My steering lock wasn't working when I got my VFR. It led to the bicycle chain around the front tyre incident... Eventually it stopped the bike from turning on and I had to get the thing replaced. 150 bucks later...

Edit: it was hard to turn on too, and felt kinda spongey.

You're referring to the ignition barrel? Wondered if that might have been the case... just didn't think it would be because as Jim2 said it was working fine when he tried it. I checked with the seller who also seemed surprised, saying he'd had no problems with it either.

Kidding, although this was the start of everything on my bike needing replacing/restoring.

The seller of my bike quickly cut contact with me and moved overseas...

Most of the stuff that was needed on mine has already been done. All new: chain, sprockets, tyres, front brake carriers and rotors, front brake pads (seller bought them, I fitted them) brakes bled with new fluid (me), steering head bearing, and one or two other things. All I know of that needs doing is a bit of a tune up, so I'm going to get a new end can to replace the rather large stock item, then get the carbs cleaned and rejetted to suit the new can. Not that it isn't ridable the way it is now, it'll just be better with a tune and new endcan. So, I don't think this one's a lemon.

But yeah, I'd still like the steering lock to work.

Lucky you. I've had to replace them all, and I suffer the biggest blow in depreciation since it's past 70,000kms now. $7000 bike worth $2000

Yes indeed, as with all the ignition barrels I've seen, it requires you to push it in before attempting to lock. But in this instance, the key pushes in but will not turn.

Good to hear the brakes are much better.

It is quite strange. With mine you just have to have the wheel pointed to the left at the right angle and the key will click round to lock. Yours just doesn't even think about going past off. It's prob the ignition barrel

OK so try squirting some CRC or WD40 or something like that down the keyhole and then push the key in and pull it in and out a few times to get everything lubed nicely and try turning it then.

I've tried that, but to no effect, unfortunately. It's the only thing I've tried, but there hasn't been any give at all. In fact, I never had any problems getting the key to turn from off to on before the application of CRC, go figure
