Matamata route is quicker usually despite being a bit longer. But the Waihi route is more fun on a bike....

750Y matamata way the fastest, also means ya can have a blast up the kamais. Like anything take it easyer until matamata you can thrash it bit from matamata to top of kamais take it easy coming down kamais the is 9/10 a cop there somewhere.

Drop us a line if ya got any spare time while down this way

And I'd have to say, what he said that she said that he said. Coz it's truuuue, Jimmy!
Besides which, it's better to go that way to Te Puke, then back via the Karangahake Gorge road, than the other way round (did just that the other weekend, after doing it the other way a couple of weeks earlier).
I reckon that last smiley is someone on a Firestorm in the turbulence behind a truck, because everytime I was in that situation, I thought of that smiley.
    ... and that's what I think.

    Or summat.

    Or maybe not...

    Dunno really....

see, last time i went down that's what my mate said, but on the way back i ended up going via waihi by accident(don't ask) & it took the same time. of course it rained solidly from akl-TP on the way down and the cops along those straights meant I had to keep near the limit mostly whereas the way back was sunny & less cops. anyway thanks for the advice peoples.
oh & cheers N, i'll keep your no handy but tell the truth i'm gonna be tight for time(TP is only halfway), hence the post.

Sweet as dude its no worrys.

I must say i have gone up to auckland alot in the past few months (working at one of our depots at near the rubgy leguge stadium), I always went up via waihi and back home matamata, yes its longer by 15kms, but its quicker over all, no matter which way you go you have to be careful of cops, from pretty much parero thru to sh2, then from wiahi thru to tauranga, but other way your pretty good until you get out of those open plains, then from matamata on,

They are talking about making matamata they sign posted route to auckland instead of currently waihi way,(why i know its 15kms difference big rite up the other week about it) Personally i like matamata way, more roads to have a bit more fun on, more places to pass.

But sweet has have a good trip mate, just remember if ya on the bike its gonna be blowly abit for the next day or so, so be careful

Via Matamata is quicker if you haven't traveled the roads.

When heading down through Paeroa and into the Krangahape Gorge, there is the turnoff for old Tauranga road. The same distance as thru Waihi, a few twisties, and then a nice long streight to the begining of the Athenri(sp) Gorge. Knocks ~10 mins off the trip to Tauranga
Speed limits are just a suggestion, like pants.

I must admit that I haven't timed it on the bike, but it has saved me time in the cage

You could try Taupiri to Gordonton then Mornisville / Matamata over the Kaimais Tauranga TePuke.
You wont want to get caught in the traffic between Tauranga and Te Puke shocking just as bad as AK.
Straight down 27 to Matamata but more cops that way counted 5 last time I passed through working in tandem. Not sure how many Morrinsville way but I have never seen any on that road may be the times I'm out.
Have a great trip You should be looking at 2 and 1/4 Hrs to 2and 1/2 hours to Tepuke from Manukau. I did the trip in 3and 1/4 hours from Kawerau to Papatoetoe last weekend over the Kaimais and up 27. Only saw one cop he had pulled someone over just before the Bombay on ramp.
