Wanted: Bike for a learner IN (150cc, 180cc) ?

Hi all,

Just wanted to get the word out there that I AM looking for a good condition (warrant/reged) bike that would be suitable as first bike for a learner

A 150cc or 180cc bike would do. I DO NOT want a 200cc + at the moment

Price range: approx < $2500 negotiable

I was thinking something like a Suzuki FXR150 if there is any out there?? (seems like a rare breed)

I am interested as to why you would be looking for a bike under 180cc. If you are looking for a low power bike then a single cylinder four-stroke 225-250cc bike (ie GN250, SRX250, Scorpio) would have a top speed similar to a FXR150. If you are absolutely sure that it has to be under 180cc, then there is nothing wrong with a FXR as a learner bike, as long as you arent very tall or heavy. More importantly

Are you only looking at four-stroke bikes?
Do you want a sports-bike/dual-purpose/commuter/cruiser?
What will you be using it for?
Are you tall/short fat/thin?
Are you mechanically minded?
Are you in a hurry to buy? (The closer to mid-winter it gets, the cheaper the bikes are)

I'm 65kg/1.72 so fairly light I would say ...

What will you be using it for?

Commute from home to city and around the Auckland suburban area (nothing outside of that)

Not particularly - in fact not much at all LOL

Do you want a sports-bike/dual-purpose/commuter/cruiser?

I am more interested in learning to bike properly/safely and to do general commuting around auckland/home/work etc NOT for dirt-biking, sports, cross-country etc

Are you in a hurry to buy? (The closer to mid-winter it gets, the cheaper the bikes are)

I am pretty damn hungry for a bike! If there is a good one at the price would be great!

Are you only looking at four-stroke bikes?

Preferably 4-stroke - only because I have heard 2-stroke bikes need a bit more attention/maintenance (I am not particularly into the mechanical side of things - although i would like to learn)

Kave, as you say : a single cylinder four-stroke 225-250cc bike (ie GN250, SRX250, Scorpio) - if it has lower power like a fxr150 then I wouldn't having a look at those too. What are the disadvantages of getting a Single cylinder 4-stroke though? I don't know the answer to that ...

Yeah mid-winter noone wants to start riding and people want cash . Gn250's and the such all have relatively low power and are perfect for learning on. My girlfriend bought an FXR150 mint condition for $1800 a month ago, gems turn up on trademe and you just need to get in quick .

The main differences between single-cylinder four stroke engines, and multi-cylinder four strokes (v-twin, parallel-twin, inline-4) is that the less cylinders you have, the less horsepower you get. A inline-4 250cc can take you up to around 180kph, a single cylinder 250cc will often top out at 120kph. Advantages of a single-cylinder engines is that they are lighter, more reliable, and cheaper to service. A downside is that they are are prone to more vibration than multi-cylinder engines, which can leave certain bits numb after a few hours.
In your situation I would be avoiding buying a bike with fairings, as they make it a lot more expensive if you drop the bike (I have had two crashes on my SRX250, the last one was 40kph into a car-and it cost me less than $200 to repair). Dont rule out a dual purpose bike, as they are cheap to run, light, cheap to crash, and you can often slap road tyres on them.

So the SRX250 is a single cylinder bike?

I would not mind a single sylinder bike as long as it does not vibrate around much.

In all I think I will stick to perhaps getting a FXR150 or even CBR150 (not a dirt bike, I don't want to have to change tyres)

Dare I say a GN250.... Single cylinder, 4 stroke, air cooled. Might make a good commuter or something like a volty?.... I always say go for the 150 2 smokers but they aint so good for commuting!

A 2 smoker is a two stroke. Fast, but tempermental.

Have you thought of a mid size scooter. They have distinct advantages for commuting, and would considerably increase the choices available to you.

I'm very reluctant to get a scooter ... only since I prefer the bike look rather than the scooter look

Maybe a mid-range scooter may have similar power to a 150 single cylinder (?) but even then a standard bike for the looks will always be what I grab than a scooter ... Thats just me though

I prefer to get a 150 or 250cc (not too speedy) - < 15,000 Kms - and not too old! -

'Tis tough finding a good one for sure ... hoping to be riding soon though
