Thumbs up Here you go Blakamin....

About 3 years ago, I bought a Uniden LRD 2000 model from Trademe as a couple of people had told me that the early Unidens were actually very good (before they started sticking on extra features and using cheap components to build them to a price). I've found it pretty darned good and like you, not spotting a camera van was my biggest worry. It picks them up at several hundred metres so there's heaps of time to roll off. On a straight road, it will pick up up a patrol car at about 3 km if their radar is on. I've hung it off the back edge of my fairing blade with a small stainless steel bracket to get as much height as possible. Got a small speaker velcroed in the helmet.

I got it for just over $100 on Trademe and you still see them advertised.

    Cheers

    Geoff,

Are you going to stick holes in your new screen to mount the radar??

    Thumbs up Hi M

Nope, the existing bracket didnt take much alteration and I've put it in the centre now. It slighly obscures the speedo at 200 km/hr plus sitting in an upright position but I figure you might be crouching down a bit by then

I used some self-adhesive foam between the clamp and the screen to protect it.

    Cheers

    Anyone?

[edit] I know this has been done before, but they were all expensive ones... I want CHEAP... (amazing how many radars you notice when ya drive a van wif one in... and how lucky I've been on the bike!)
TH ecordless one is probably the Escort Solo. Crap when they came out, and haven't improved, with poor performance.
I woudl suggest looking on Trademe and getting an Escort 85000X50. Don't pay more than $500 for a new one, as there are several sellers doing them for less than this. They ahve a built in earphone jack. The cheap Cobras etc don't pick up the photo radar, and you need to fit an earphone jack as well. Put the money towards a decent system.
I used to run the radar detector FAQ in the early days of the Net.
I use a Valentine 1 with the HARD display system, which paid for itselt on my South Island trip....

The best advice is - save your money and put it towards your next fine.

Getting a good quality radar detector seems like a colossal waste of money to me, particularly given that no matter what the cost, you can't be protected from laser guns unless you buy a jammer. On most other occasions you'll see the cop about the same time they can see you. Hopefully there's another traffic between him and you and all will be well. If it's a head-on speed camera, no harm done (apart from the ever-present threat that one day the bureaucrats in Land Transport New Zealand get pissed off and make front plates for bikes mandatory).

And, for the 99.9% of the time I'm out riding, the last thing I want is something squealing in my ear every time it gets intimidated by a self-opening door.

Pick your road if you want to ride fast. Otherwise ride carefully and save yourself some dosh.

How legal are detectors? Jammers are illegal right?

True, saved myself a fortune over the years by NOT buying a radar detector, keeps you on you toes too, no complacency 'cos you have a detector (hopefully) doing the work for you.

My radar detector has paid for itself - the added warnign if the radar is running is invaluable, and they can ping you before you see them or have a chance to slow down.
OTOH, if you are doing 120+, there isn't much that will save you. If you are going to go warp speed, it will cost, sooner or later. Most traffic cruices on the open road at 115-120 ish - so there is $120-200 and 35 points you can save, plus the potential of increased insurance premiums or a declined claim.

Ummm Scumdog, you missed my point when I wrote:

What I was saying is - if you are buying a detector, buy a good one.
OR, save your money for your next speeding tax, I mean fine.
