The blinding light says NO!

last night on my way to work was about 930pm minding my own, in my own little world in a dead street in Papakura when FLASH.... heart beating faster than usual then i realize i can no longer see the road let alone my speedo any more, so pull over to rub my eyes, and start to question, what the fuck was that flash... seeing alot of amber and nothing else i figure must have been a speed camera, about 2 seconds before this flash i had looked at my speedo i was doing 55ks max (ok maybe 60)
I guess uncle helen wants her pocket money next week, but it makes me think that those flashes could be dangerous not only to ones pocket but to personal safety on the road

just remember the blinding light says NO to speeding and NO to being able to see on the road.

I wouldn't worry too much about a ticket.

The flash threshold is usually set lower than the ticketing threshold; just having a photo taken of you is no guarantee of getting a bill in the mail.

Also, if the flash hit you in the eyes, the camera would have been facing you - with no visible numberplate on the front of the bike, even if you were being an Evil Lawbreakerer, you're away laughing.

You make a good point regarding the effect of the flash on night vision, though. I hadn't considered it from that angle before. I've been flashed by speed cameras at night, and it's certainly quite bright; I can imagine that it could indeed be a bit of a safety hazard for folk without perfect vision.

yeah i struggle enough with one eye as it is

it took a good 5 mins to get my eye right again

Happened to me too - with the same effect. After dark, eyes wide open letting in all the light they can and POW.

It's a serious hazard.

While on that subject what about those trucks they have for road works, the ones with a grid of lights and on the top huge strobes, the same effect and if you are unlucky you get at least to flashes before you can get past the dam things.

they are more of a hazard and how can a strobe light be safe and create saftey most people would fixate on a white flashing light therefor making it a possiblity for target fixation

...and dont get me started on the road cones

I can only hope that because it was so blinding to you that you were facing the light which means the number plate on the back of the bike would not have been captured, thus no ticket. I agree about the blinding light though, bit of a stupid thing to have happen to people driving down the road.

If its unmanned and your going towards it on a bike, how can they get your plate? Back in the days that I was a right proper shyteheal (way worse than anything seen on KB) I tested the theory when the cameras first came out. Kept going around the block and would nail it before the camera (out of town/dark/little traffic) and pop the bird as I wizzed by. Gave me a buzz at the time, but I'll admit to feeling maybe a little nervous for awhile as a ticket could have arrived, but never did.
