KATHERINE PRUMM INJURED IN FINAL PRACTICE.

On Tuesday Katherine and replacement Kiwi mechanic, Matt Comisky, went to a local MX track in Belgium for what was scheduled to be her penultimate practice session.

After doing several fast and faultless laps, a jubilant Katherine declared that both rider and bike were all set and ready to do battle on the weekend.

On Wednesday, she continued her training, as per scheduled workout and travelled to Helescine, a hardpack track, for a final workout. The track was reserved for GP riders only.

Katherine elected to do a 20 minute moto and with excellent times and only three laps to go in the final practice moto, hit the tabletop at an acute angle. The front wheel washed out and as she low-sided, the 'inside' right leg landing awkwardly and being forced to take her and the bike's combined force and weight.

She was aware of an audible 'pop' and tearing sensation as a knee structure gave way under the impact. The bike slewed off the table top at its highest point and careened off the track at right angles to it and down the embankment.

Because the knee began to swell immediately and was almost instantly accompanied by pain and a feeling of 'fullness' behind the knee, Katherine knew this was no trifling injury.

Katherine had experienced this audible 'pop' sound and sensation once before but involving the left leg in 2006, whilst she was leading the USA WMA Women's MX Championship. That required a total knee reconstruction and a forced retirement from her USA campaign.

An urgent consultation was arranged with a local orthopaedic specialist well known for his skills by the MX community who confirmed the worst. Total rupture of the right ACL ligament with accompanying joint instability. There is only one treatment and that is surgery.

Katherine has elected to try and ride, depending on the degree to which the swelling and pain subside in the next 48 hours. She is hopeful that the knee will be stable enough to allow for competing the first two rounds which are on consecutive weekends.

I've just limped in the door from visiting my surgeon about my right ACL reconstruction (not bike related this time), to read this. She must be gutted...

That is the suckiest sucky thing I've heard since JC did his shoulder last year. No on second thoughts even more.

My worst fears. as I said in an earlier post, some times I think you can just over do your training. She just had a good ride on Sunday, some off the bike fitness in the gym would have been the go.
What would I know I'm no athlete. Just hope she bounces back.

Katherine Prumm's world motocross campaign has been thrown into doubt on the eve of the start of this year's five-round championship in Bulgaria. The 19-year-old Yamaha rider from south Auckland, New Zealand, has crashed just three laps from the end of a practice session in Belgium on Wednesday and has seriously injured her right knee.



The two-time Women's World Cup winner landed awkwardly from a jump, her bike landing on her, and she felt a tearing sensation in her right knee as her leg took the brunt of the impact.

Her knee immediately began to swell and she knew the injury was serious.

An inspection by an orthopaedic specialist confirmed she had ruptured her right ACL ligament. She will require surgery, possibly total reconstruction of the knee joint, and the doctor had recommended that she does not ride.

"But she's a head-strong girl," said her father Erich, speaking from Sofia, Bulgaria. "She's determined to line up at the first round. She will see how she copes with the pain over the next 48 hours at take it from there.

"If she does ride, we will make sure she is well braced and strapped because her knee will be very unstable. She will ride practice at the GP and see if she can tolerate it.

"She says she's worked too hard for this to give up now."

Prumm's mother, Helen, agreed the outlook was grim.

"I have heard it might be a wet weekend, so that will be a problem for Katherine too. She's devastated. She has done so much hard training and said she has never felt so good on the bike as right now."

Prumm's build-up to her title defence had been progressing well before the latest set-back.

"I had my best season ever this year and finished 12th overall in the MX2 class (against the men in the New Zealand nationals) and my best race finish was 10th as well as taking my third women's title. My goal for the season in the men's was top 15 and I was really proud to have achieved it," she said.

Just last weekend she raced against some of the best MX2 men on the planet, competing in the Flanders MX Trophy in Tongeren-Berg, Belgium. She finished the day 16th overall as GP rider Wyatt Avis won the MX2 class.

Prumm had managed 15th and 16th in these two international MX2 motos.

Now it seems her world has come crashing down and it remains to be seen if she will be a starter at this weekend's women's season opener.

The five-round 2008 women's championships begin in Bulgaria on Sunday, with rounds to follow in Italy (May 18), France (June 15), Germany (June 29) and the Netherlands (September 7).

Meanwhile, there will be a two-pronged Kiwi assault on the women's title this year with Manawatu motocross rider Nikki Scott looking good for her first tilt at the title.

The 18-year-old Scott, who rides for the Auckland-based West/Red Baron Kawasaki team in New Zealand, has joined the French Bud Racing team for her European campaign.

Scott will be riding a similar Kawasaki bike that Prumm used to win back-to-back titles in 2006 and 2007 after finishing second in 2005.
