Heavy. I haven't taken my one anywhere really gnarly, however. The standard K750 tyres are pretty good in hard pack dirt, a bit squirrelly in loose stuff but that could have been me s much as the bike. I replaced the rear with a Vee rubber thing that was a little better in mud. didn't stop me dropping it though (cracked the right side panel)
The engine pulls well and gets better as the Kms increase. Brakes are good, suspension is (as far as I can tell) pretty good as well.
on one track that became pretty badly 4WD rutted, I was able to get further than a KTM 950 or a 650 Dakar, if that counts for anything

Really depends on what you consider off road to be. If off road to you is gravel and well formed tracks then the KLR is great. If you mean real kiwi trail riding terrain you'd be better off with a WR250R or similar.

More adventure riding gravel roads to and from rallys etc, Not looking at hard core offroad! Dr650 seems fit for the job but by the time you do some mods ie tank/seat/screen/rack , not really much in it $wise other than dr leans more to the dirt side than the klr. Tried a 1150gs nice but to heavy , bmw650 doesn't really do it for me either.

Then the KLR is your bike. Or you could spend twice as much and get a KTM640 Adventure.
