And, good though it is, a recording pales by comparison to the real thing - one of those sounds that makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up, like an F1 car in the flesh too....

Couldn't be fagged reading thru the thread....

... but it's all very subjective.

For me, it's all to do with how it's set up, and almost all bikes sound good with race exhausts. I like the sound of a (megaphoned) Manx Norton, a CCM or similar with a straight pipe, a Ducati with Termignonis, a VFR750 with an Arrow/Remus/Scorpion/etc muffler, any similarly equipped triple (Triumph, Benelli, etc.), any four or six with a decent aftermarket system, a two-stroke with expansion chamber(s) (especially a twin or triple). Even the very weird Suszuki roatary RE5 has some auditory appeal.

What I don't like is bikes where the mechanical noise outweighs the exhaust noise, or the exhaust is loud just for the sake of loudness, like debaffled mufflers, Harley drag pipes, and the like. They end up sounding like there's summat wrong with them, which there is. Also, small displacement bikes with noisy exhausts usually sound too "try hard": they sound like they're going a million km/h, when they're barely moving.
    ... and that's what I think.

    Or summat.

    Or maybe not...

    Dunno really....

I haven't read all the thread....

I know I'm biased but you cannot beat the sound of a Guzzi wound out!!!!!
    mmmmmmm

But then it is subjective, my ex used to taylor make exhausts, for ducatis, and guzzi's, and some jap bikes...

But actually the sound of a laverda, hehe...with it's baffles falling out did make a good sound too on the revs

    Then there's the old Tridents...

OH! And the sound of Sidecar Bob's beamer (Sidecar) !!! Didn't think much of beamers till I heard that! (he knows this )

Hmm too many to pick just one!

    The best motorcycle sound ever?

Well that'd be my KTM690smc with the full Ti Akra system and the cut down airbox: it sucks and blows at the same time and is frankly stunning.

But I suppose you could say this is a very subjective thing and maybe to some a V8 Moto Guzzi or shitbox Triumph twin 'sounds better'.

Hard to say exactly but having sat in the dyno room with a Britten on full noise; I can still hear the music playing from Johns' creation
