What bike? Tall "learner rider"

Hi all

I have been riding for a couple of years overseas in Thailand (where you don't need a license as such) and am pretty confident on a bike.

I am going to get my learners here in the next week or so but am unsure what bike to buy.

See I am around 6'6' (1.98m) and this was no problem in Thailand because I could just ridea CBR600 or whatever size bike I wanted, but here I will be restricted to 250cc and thus the smaller bikes.

So my question really is, whats the biggest 250cc bike you can get? I prefer sports bikes. The Hyosung GT 250R ones look pretty big.

Hyosung GTR is the biggest 250 as far as I've seen

yea go for a Hyosung GT250R they wont make you look like a giant like some of the other 250's do

You could always go for an exemption that will allow you to ride a larger displacement bike.. theres a few threads floating round covering this topic

Nice! I might just scrap buying a 250cc for now and once I get my learners just make an application and see what they say. Fark I would be stoked if I could get a 600cc something.

I'd be carefull about full sport fairing bikes. I'm 6'2" and I find on a FZR250 that my knee's are always knocking into the edges of the bikes fairings when taking corners.

But where on my GPX I don't have that problem because its not a supersport like the FZR, and thus has less, err, obtrusive fairings.

The tallest 250's you are likely to find are dual purpose bikes (DRZ 250 etc). The DR (for example) has a 900mm seat height, and the upright riding position means you won't end up as cramped as you would on most 250cc sports bikes.
I know you said you prefer sports bikes, but for a lot of them, you'd also need to budget on a live-in chiropractor, so it can be useful to think outside the square.

The best thing to do (as well as applying for an exemption) would be to go around as many bike shops as you can, and have a sit on every road legal 250 you can find. This will give you an idea of relative sizes, and riding positions, and you can shop for any gear you will need while you are there.

I took a friend out for a ride on the hyosung and he is also 6'6" and he really struggled with it. After about 20min the circulation was being cut off at his knees due to the angle his legs bent to reach the levers.

It sounds like you might go down the exemption route but if you don't make sure you take the bike for a decent spin.

Was that a cruiser? Sports Hyos are supposed to be ok but some cannot be in a cruiser sit position for long.

No it was the 250R sports bik. He has really long legs....
