No such thing as a wof or rego on a sidecar.

If you have the sidecar on the bike when you take the bike for a wof the sidecar will be checked too.

If you remove the sidecar, take the solo bike for a wof, then reattach the chair, that's up to you.

No rego payable on the chair whether it's on of off

But regardless of the wof situatiuon, if the chair is not safe and up to wof standards (eg tyres etc) then a police officer can ticket you and order the combo off the road .

EDIT No VIN required on the sidecar either.

Those Chang Jiang 750s look awesome. Sidevalve BMW R71 replicas. Reverse gear and everything. Maybe the Urals are better, but these look nicer and are a hell of a lot cheaper.

Dirt cheap - they are not allowed on the motorways (no motorbikes allowed) and in the citys (150cc limit) so illegal unless your in the country.
The average R1 second had cost around 30,000 RMB (about $5K NZ) so i imagine a CJ750 you could pick up for around 5-10000RMB (about $1K NZ).
However i would recommend the Ural, as it has NZ backing (in Katikati). You also dont have to go through the vin process as they can set that all up for you on a new bike.

Yes but they come in at about $NZ12,000, right? I would've thought CJ750 bits would be cheap and plentiful from China as well?

There was a CJ750 on Trademe, all registered and set up here for about $5000 from memory. Average condition though.

    Besides, check out this picture:

EDIT: Looks like these guys know what to do -- in some other documents they state they've exported bikes to NZ before. They do a left-hand sidecar conversion: http://www.cj750.net/sitepics/left/left_01.htm Seem to be some sort of expats living in Beijing who know their shit and aren't trying to trick people. Prices look good.

Thats a very nice looking setup
I bet it increases the value of the whole unit by about the value of the chair.
Could well see one of those on my XS, lol
be worth more than the bike

Dunno about the parts front - the one i saw in the "Garage Ghetto" in Shanghai was pulled to bits. I cant imagine it would be too hard to get them. But its all 2 class stuff as all primary sales stuff in China seemed to be scoots.
Ural was about $6K for bike + $3K for side car last time i checked - quite a few years ago however.
If the CJ importer seems all good then i say go for it. What would import tax be?

They have about a million toll gates on the motorways in and out of Shanghai/Hangzhou/Souzhou/Beijing (dunno about the rest) couldn't take a motorbike their it seemed. On Highways it seemed ok - but not many HW still existed.
Mind due driving in China is ummmmm interesting. Like NZ but everyone has Parkinsons. So death on a motorbike on the motorways is pretty much guaranteed.
