What are those lines on the road?

Ok, so occasionally there are white spray-painted lines on the road running in the direction of the road, approximately as wide apart as the left and right tyres of a car. There are two of them, they are not continuous (they are dotted kindof), and they usually run for about 300 metres or so. They have distances marked out eg the 100m, 200m and 300m distances. I have noticed them on corners and on straits. And they have been in the middle of no-where where there wouldn't have been any underground utilities buried either. Hmmm.

    What are these for?

I initially thought they were an experiment to see if people would follow them unconsciously, thus wearing the road differently. But I don't think so.

    Anyone know?

We enquired about these a while back. Supposedly they are part of a road survey system that tests load strength.

Yeah, AFAIK they measure the distance apart from each other every 6 months or something to see how quickly the road surface moves.

They have a pretty fancy machine to put them down and measure them too.

They have something similar southbound on Manukau Rd, going downhill just after Greenwood's corner. Right where I normally ride (at least when I'm not swerving around the sunken manhole covers -- *CLUNK* -- that are right in the way heh).

    Really, you're all wrong.

    It's government conspiracy to see;
-how many people actually notice them
    -question their presence
-and then add to them in other colours...

We're supposed to make them all into rainbows.
Who, me? I just wander from thread to thread.

Thanks Winter, - years of intrigue satisfied! I saw them doin these lines in Te Poi one day and was going to stop and ask but traffic precluded.

Just one last mystery left now - how do Women think?

I'm under my own influence... That's bad enough.

Glad to hear the only mystery left is how do women think, 'cause apparently I'm one, and I don't know either.

    (maybe in pretty colours?)
