How long should this trip take, obeying the open speed limit most of the time of course, and any recommendations on the best route to take.

I'm going to be riding down on Xmas day, will be leaving mid morning.

hi Good ride you have a couple of options
option 1 down via Tuaranga, whakatane opotiki gisborne mahia

option 2 Rotorua whakatane opotiki Gisbourne Mahia

option 3 Taupo napier up to mahia

or if you have a few days

Tauranga Whakatane Opotiki, around the east cape down to Gisbourne then Mahia

if in one day I would go option 1 or 2, nicer roads

if a few days Definately go around the east cape really good ride one of the best

Oh and the time, if you left at 7.00am on the single day options allowing for rest , lunch petrol give yourself a whol day and you will be fucked.

in a car it would be a 8 hour trip hard out, on a bike it will be longer as you will get more tired
I would definately take a couple of days to do it, be alot more enjoyable for you throw a tent on your bike, or if you dont have one stop in a Hammy and you can borrow one of mine. small and waterproof

I was planning on going the taupo-napier way and doing the whole thing in the day. I will probably leave earlier in the morning and have a few stops. Crikey 8 hours, here is hoping the sun is shining!

Interestingly, the quickest route takes you through Rotorua & Murupara & the Urewera National Park - I didn't think that road was sealed?

mate, the taupo-napier route is probably the quickest as it involves more open roads.
I can't really say how long it'll take at the speed limit but it took me 6 hours which included about an hour of pissing around.
If You are in the mood for a nice cruise go via waioeka gorge...probably take You 8 or so hours.

rotorua. murapara, waikeremoana wairoa. shortest in distance.

only 160kms of gravel and no cops or cars from murapara to wairoa.

hI sLIM, NOPE ITS NOT SEALED, i DID IT ON MY OLD ADVENTURE BIKE (OOPS CAPS) a couple of years ago, rotorua murapara, Wiaroa Gisbourne, Mahia, round the east cape, back to hammy via Whakatane Rotorua, took us 3 days with lots of finding trails and blatting around, best damn bike trip of me life.
But its definately not sealed 3 hours of gravel

so sell that pocket rocket, rice burner and buy a R1150GS and head them them cop free green hills again.

and the best thing about the 1150GS is ya can tune up the rice burners in the tight twisty stuff.

Sort of... Wises only use major highways, not the byways which may be lots quicker.

Without slagging them too much, Wises also don't know much about the roads themselves... The quickest way is definitley Auck - Taupo - Napier - Mahia. It is also the most boring way.
