I don't really see the point of making the throttle bodies look like carbs. I suppose some of the older buyers out there still have a hang up about FI and may not even realise that the bike is injected. Personally I like the look of efi throttle bodies over carbs.

yeah, I'd love to have a ride of one to compare directly with mine (07 carby).

It's not a hang up like that - the bike is a 'retro' - made and styled to look like an old school bike. Carbs were part of the styling. All this is - is a fancy casting for the bodies to fit the retro style.

And not 'necessarily' for older buyers - the America was the best selling Triumph last time I asked. But it's a while ago.

360 degree cranks same - 270 degree cranks +7hp and better torque.

Improved induction on the 270 best guess as to why.

that clarifies, but my 07 carby America has the 270 as well (as do Speedmster & scrambler) the bonnies have the 360

    Well we know that.

For the record Mr Patrick Stafford at AMPS is where I go if I want the good oil on Triumphs.

    Test rode the EFI Speedie

Had a decent blat around the bays a few times today on the new 865cc EFI Speedmaster.

There is more power than my 790cc America had, not a truck load more, but more all the same, and enough to make it far more enjoyable. The bike only had 100kms on it so it had not loosened up yet. Still, it felt smoother, perky and ready and willing to overtake traffic with some authority this time.
The baffles had been removed to give it some noise ,but to be honest I didn't appreciate the extra noise or the back firing - nor did the cyclists I scared.

What I really liked. Really, really, really liked. Was to taste the sweet handling of these bikes again. For stretched out cruisers the America/Speedmaster would take some beating on a twisty road. The sheer bliss of leaning a cruiser well over in a bend and rolling on the power [yes, yes, power relative to the cruiser species] took me back to why I enjoyed my America so much.

These bikes have more cornering clearance than most of the species, and up to 120kph the suspenders can cope with bumps OK. On a smooth curve it's a big grin sweeping around a bend, with your feet well up in front of you, body leaned back, pegs touching down.

Very easy to flick from side to side and the twin front brakes on the Speedie certainly grab harder than my America's single disc did. Possibly too well, since I tested a few panic grabs of the front and the tyre screeched in response too quickly. Perhaps the weaker America's brake is better suited? On a damp road the Speedie could dump and unsuspecting Rider.

If I was after a cruiser as a second bike - and it could only be as a second bike, then one of these new EFIs would be for me.

Roll on the bigger 1700cc, or whatever size it will be, next year.

I like the flowing curves of the America & Speedie. Good looking beasts.

I prefer the handlebars of the America that reach further back to provide a more relaxed position to the Speedies narrower, straight flat bar. Put the Speedie seat onto and America and ..yum.
    Gotta love the new Trumpets!

    Hey Dave
I have been thinking of buying a new Triumph America, a new 08 model.
I currently own an 04 Harley Roadster 1200.
Mate what is the Trumpy like 2 up?
There is no demo to ride yet (go figure??) how the hell do we test them?
Any ways i like the look of them and there is no waiting list like there is for a new HD .
My only concern power wise is the smaller motor compared to the Harley which has massive torque .
What do you are your thoughts as a comparison?
    Cheers
    Chris

Hey Chris - It depends on how big you and the old girl are.
For me it's underpowered for 2-up work. Great solo.
Whereas it isn't for the Hippie - eg.
You would have to ride one to decide. A non efi one would give you enough of an impression.

Still miss my old America. We got the first one out of Anza and now they should be a little bit better. Still preffer the old tank compared to the later model but hey thats only my opinion.
