Hi all.
Re. these Hero cams.
On the website they are selling these Hero cams for $130-150ish U.S. What do they go for here?
For lots less or even a similar price you can find cams that will give you nicer quality. These are waterproof tho which is nice.
I use a Sanyo Xacti C1 that I picked up second hand fo $150. Great quality and very small and light so can be mounted all over the place. Also have a C5 ($200) that I am going to use as a backwards pointing cam.

Am still playing with mounts and having great fun with them. Am going to test a 'fork cam' tomorrow like Sparky Bills posted a link for. Should be easy to setup.

I bought a Gopro earlier this week. The camera itself isn't brilliant, not mini DV quality but better than the average digi cam.
The big selling point for me is the mounting system. It's really flexible meaning you can put the camera almost any where. No dodgy camera setups.
I have a mini dv cam and was thinking about getting some of those ram mounts but you'd have to buy half a dozen of then and it still wouldn't be as flexible.

I was at Fry's Electrical in the states a month a go, they had a nifty wee device. Essentially it's a USB memory stick for $100USD, that takes 2 rca inputs (sound and video), and saves the stream to the flash memory on board. Once you're done, you just take it off the bike and plug it into your PC Lets you use any camera and mic, so you could stealthily mount a wee pencil cam

The Gopro has a data rate of 4Mbps vs the Canon at 35Mbps so that's only 9x better.

Plus the Gopro will record an hour on a 2GB card so you'll need to buy at least 16GB worth of cards on top of your purchase price.

Plus there is the mounting system. Good luck with that.

And I'm pretty sure you'll be way more upset than me when the camera falls off and smashes to bits on the road.

But anyway, go for it. Can't wait to see your HD vids. Post us a link when they're done.

Funny that, I've borrowed one from work to trial on the bike. Video quality is primo, but it uses motion JPEG to record which takes up shit loads of storage.
1280 x 720P though! It just means buying a few large capacity SD cards...

HD would definately be a great way to go but it's bloody expensive. If you're on a budget (like me *sniff*) you should look into cameras that record MPEG4, the newer the better.
I use a Sanyo Xacti and I think they rock. Cost me about $150ish S/H so I got two! Have yet to use two on a ride but use one almost every ride now.
The more modern ones use the newer MPEG4 compression (H.264 I think?) which means nice quality and very small file sizes.
On my older ones I get about 40-60 mins on a 1gb card and a full battery cycle. Thats at 640x480, best quality it can do which is pretty good. Records straight to an SD card. The quality is a million times nicer than those Hero ones as far as I've seen.
They're about the size of a large cigarette packet and about the same weight too.

That sounds pretty good. Any idea what resolution it records at?

My camera set up I use at track days uses a security bullet camera (CCD chip) and a microphone made up from a circuit I found on the net, plugged into a jxd900 portable media player. The jxd900 has a flash drive and takes SD cards. The video is only 320x240 pixels and is fairly highly compressed, it gets a bit blocky sometimes. It can record probably 4 hours plus on a 2GB card.

A usb stick with RCA inputs is really all that's needed, although I guess its nice being able to review (and show off...) your videos at the track. Can be useful if you're trying to figure out why you fell off.
