Yep,and the reason it was "only" a 750 was that bigger 4s were not allowed back then.WSB bikes have to be based on road bikes,as have similar series over the years.Other homologation specials include the Honda RC30 of way back and the even older 1000cc version of the Suzuki Katana and Kawasaki`s 998cc Z1000J ,I think the standard ones were a touch over 1000cc and thus not legal for production based racing of the day.The Kat and big Z were not that far from regular models but later things like the R7 and RC30 were pure exotica.Similar rules still apply and you can even buy a road-legal Foggy Petronas if you`ve got the dosh and the contacts.yamaha learned a lesson with the FZR750,brilliant bike but the Fireblade was out and despite it being probably the best 750 of it`s time(still makes RIDE`s annual survey "Best Bike" top twenty 11 years after going out of production)it was "only a 750" to the punters and most went the "bigger is better" route.Despite the bigger engine the R1 has benefitted from development on the R7 race bikes, for example the R7 was the first fuel-injected Yam,anyone tempted to shell out all that money might like to ponder the fact that even Yamaha admit to "finally getting it right" by the time the R1 got it.There was recently one on Ebay in Britain so they`re still around. One of the Virgin Yamaha riders still has one as a road bike and reckons it`s the best bike he`s ever ridden.Rule changes now mean the R1 is legal for Superbike racing but it`s not proved quite as successful as expected un-like the GSXR1000.

Suzuki also had a GSXR-750R ltd edtition around the same time as the RC30. Unfortunately it wasn't in the same league as the RC and didn't feature very well. Can't remember the specs (or find any after a quick search on the net) but sure it had a dry clutch, more magnesium parts, etc. Looked good for its day (once again, the RC30 even looked better, that thing is a timeless piece of art).

BTW, found this website while searching, might be handy for someone.
