1001 reasons NOT to split lanes....

1....Bus and truck sitting very close together leaving me bugger all room to zip by in the "unofficial motorbike lane"
2....The bloke on the GS500E right up my ass so I cant brake without him ramming me

There I was tooling along quite happily, being very alert as you do when splitting, until I meet up with Mr Bus and Mr Truck. Bugger. "Hang on, I CAN fit through there!", I says to myself. Without much further ado, I make my run, have to run right over the cats eyes (this is just at the end of the North Western, so the run into Nelson St has a slight camber on it) and slipped off the damn things.

I mean honestly, whos the bloke who decided to paint them with Teflon (tm) paint anyway?

Hmmm, maybe change that title to 1001 reason to be slow and cautious when splitting lanes.
1) Dont hoon
2) If theres a tight spot between two large vehicles, wait till one pulls ahead of the other.
3) Try and avoid catseyes.

This morning I managed to do all of my splitting in the "accepted correct" area, to the right of the vehicles but still within the lane, while indicating. I was only doing 10 to 15km/h faster than them and it was all good.

Its not often you get room to go down that side of the cars, but they all saw me coming (most of them anyway) and shifted.

Why the heck doesn't Transit just make the shoulder a bike lane? Wouldn't cost them stuff all?

Also (and I know this has been covered before but I just want someone to summarise), why indicate when splitting?

The reason is to show you are overtaking the car on your left, not undertaking the car on your right... cause thats illegal.

So what do you do if you're following in the fast lane on the motorway, and want to split between the fast lane and middle lane?

Move into a gap (often non existant) in the middle lane and then indicate right and start to split?

I can't really decide what I think the best thing is to do with indicating while lanesplitting, so oftentimes I just indicate that I'm about to move between the cars and then cancel the indicators while splitting because otherwise people might thing I'm about to pull into the right lane if indicating right.

Krayy, good on ya for staying upright. The painted markings are bad too, especially when they've got so much paint on them that there's a noticable bump when you go over them. Or when you're taking off from the lights after lanesplitting to the front and accidentally wheelspin due to your rear wheel being on the wet painted markings...

To the chappie on the BMW that hung around and followed me all the way up the NW motorway to Rosebank Rd a couple of evenings ago, MEH! I got home about 20 minutes later because of you, you sod. I done *saw* them little sideways glances as you trickled back and forth in the lanes around me.

To the original poster - if you didn't fall off, where's the hassle? Keep at it. And do try to speed up going along that stretch, I get so bothered by all the slowpokes teetering along between cars there at a 5kph speed differential when I'm trying to get to work on time...

(I wasn't the rude person on the GS500 who was following you too closely, though. I never do that.)

probably the same wanker that thought it was a good idea to put smooth glass beads in the line marking paint.

At least you know the council has sense of humour. I mean, they create bus/bike lanes and then cover them with green paint and to put the willies up us when it rains (Chinamans hill as a case in point - can't do more than 30km/h down there in the rain).

Then there were the two inbreeds in 4wds that were obviously missing each other, so they got out of their tanks to have a chat at the lights in Newton Rd. The problem was that inbreed number two didn't think to look before he opened his door and didn't notice the 115 watts of halogen lights shining into the vacant space that normally holds a brain.
I missed him, but don't know how. Good Suzy brakes I guess.
I was able to inform him of his resemblance to female genitalia however, and to suggest that if he missed his boyfriend so much, then perhaps they should get a room. He didn't see the humour in that though, his loss.

To split lanes? Is it acceptable below a certain speed? Can we use the bus lanes in Auckland and on the motorways without fear of being busted?

Splitting lanes is open to debate about how it should be done etc.

Motorcycle's can use Bus lanes around and in Auckland City, but NOT on the motorways.
