    Places to Pitch a Tent???

    Hi all,
Just realised that as of yet I haven't planned to do anything between Xmas & New Years.

So I figure Me and my Wife will just jump on the bike and hit the road. Not sure when or where we'll go yet but will probably leave Wellington Monday or Tuesday next week.
Might head up either the East or West coast.

My worry is that we won't be able to find a tent site or cheap cabins at this time of year and I won't know where we're heading until we're on the road so can't really book ahead.

Does anyone know of camping grounds, public parks (that you can camp in), front lawns, driver rest areas etc? We'll probably get up as far as Coromandel but as I say, we have no fixed plans at all.

    Thanks Everyone

You can pitch a tent off the rolling deck of an Interisland ferry, out the window of a speeding bus, or kick the emergency window of the bus open and pitch it out there.

Stop being such a cheap bastard and get a motel.

All good suggestions...but I am a cheap bastard! Unless you can prescribe anti-cheap bastard pills them I'm destined to continue looking for cheap options.

Any number of strip bars would be fine, or if you can find one an adult cinema. Or early morning in your bed. Oh whoops, not that kind of place to pitch a tent!! Sorry, my mistake. :confused2

Theres a free camping ground in taupo.... just north of town.

You can camp on East cape at the end of the road and no-one cares, and then run up the hill because you almost got up too late to see the sunrise

There's heaps of cheap camping places round as long as you don't stay in major towns - go up the west coast, cross thru Taupo, and get to the Coromandel and join the hordes who will be there - or just skip that and go round east cape - very nice place, good twisties on the way from north, but the road is ocassionally a bit rugged.

I reckon you should ring up maybe a day or so in advance and check things out. Even if you decide in the morning, give a few places a call... You ought to be able to find stuff, but ringing up would save you the hassle of hooning round every campground in town at 9pm cos you just got in and they are all full.

You are better off squeezing into a campground tent spot than trying to get a cabin - people normally have a small patch of grass free, but cabins get booked...

Sad to hear. We had great family outings and holidays at Opunake when I was a kid. Lots of very happy memories.

still quite a few of decent people go there but it is always going to be a few losers ruin it for everyone.
and it isnt normally the locals.
    they are all good folk.
rode down there on sat and normally the camp is pretty full at this time of year, but there would have only been about 10 if that tents there.
weather has been to unpredicable me guess.
