They're a good solid bike but they aren't anything special. For similar dollars I could buy a similar age KTM 525EXC, fit an oil cooler (just as importantly boosts oil volume) and a long range tank. I'd then have more hp, top of the wazz WP suspension, a 6 speed box and 10kg's less weight to lug around all with the convenience of leccy start.

    Pity I can't afford either.

    Yes . Around 40RWHP XR650R and 45 RWHP KTM 525EXC.
And you don't need the oil cooler. All I've done to mine is fit a rad overflo bottle and a 13l tank.

Dino - I will have to let you have a go on the 525 some time. Does make the XR feel like a BIG RED PIG alright.

I still want another one and drool over them every time I see one - once you've had a BRP they get in your blood. One of these days when I pay off all my debts or sell my VFR if I'm still young enough to kick start a bike I'll get another... age isn't an issue with quality (the bike that is not me!). I've had a 10 year younger DRZ and reckon the XR is infinitely superior.

For multi day adventure riding I think it would be interesting to looking at maintenance periods.
If I was doing a 4 day trip I wouldn't think you'd need to change the oil on the XR but you'd probably want to do at least one change on the 525 even with a larger oil capacity?

The regular oil changes with the 525 are mostly related to having tiny oil cpacity (1.2L). The oil cooler kit I've seen bumped the volume up to 2L, more than the XR's 1.6L's, for about $200USD. Should last at least as long as the XR between changes.

But as someone else pointed out, for what these bikes are used for the rider is the biggest part of the equation. Someone half decent on a CT90 would beat me on either of these things, sad but true.

    .
Not if you ride them as designed.
The exc can freely rev around 30-40% higher than a XR650 (rider dependent of course). My understanding is that oil deterioration is mainly due to combustion by- products and crap (either shavings from the engine or dust/dirt from the outside), surely there are more combustion by- products produced in higher reving engine?
Therefore does 2L oil on a bike that revs 11k+ RPM = 1.6L on a bike that revs 8k? I don't know but I doubt it.

I change to oil in the 525 every 1500-2000kms and only use the best diesel oil (Delo 400. Would be better if they called it Delo 525).
    525's don't rev to 11k+ rpm.
