Ive owned a fair few 250s mate and if ur going for the hypo 4cyl ones, you have to spend a bit more to get a well looked after, low kms bike. I learned the hard way with my first CBR and NSR, so i spent $5500 getting the beauty i now own. Its not worth getn an average cheap 1 bcoz when it goes pop you are gona face huge bills to fix it. And broken bikes are like having a girlfriend with a STD, its just not as fun when you cant ride them. So if your realy keen on the fast 250s, SAVE MORE MONEY... or just get something less extreme, which is fine because some of the most fun ive ever had has been on crusty old 125s

Alternatively, spend $2000 on a GN or something, and get your licence, and then spend $5000 on a 600 rather than spending $5000 on a 250. What a waste. Especially since you're way more likely to fall off and wreck it.

Its not a waste bcoz 250s hold there value more than bigger bikes. So when the time comes to sell it you get your money back easy. And if hes gona crash hes better off on a 250, not a 600.

    My Two Cents

    Hi,

I am a learner rider and have been riding for 6mths on a Yamaha Scorpio 225cc. Initially it was a great bike to learn on - very light, easy to control etc. However, after 4-5 months I started wishing I had something with a little more grunt. For the last couple of months I have been ringing the crap out of the poor wee thing on about 7000-8000 revs just to get 110kms out of it. I have outgrown it fairly quickly.

However, we picked it up with only 300kms on the clock for $2800...so almost within your price range if you want something really easy to start with. In hindsight, though I wish I'd had the sack to go for the extra few cc and go power....so I guess my input is more useful as a 'what not to buy', for what its worth.

Exactly what I am thinking.. Its all great to get a gn 250 but what happens in 4 months when my skill level broaden and im still stuck with a bike that is made for learning lol... No offence to all the GN riders lol

It turns out my mate has an 01 ninja that i could get for a good price.. Done 50,000 but have been told most of those k's have been done on long trips...

Any one have any knowledge of the bike?

Ultimately something that has a 6th gear & or handles 100k's on the open road comfortably is a good bet. Can't go wrong with a Ninja, they are pretty popular bikes.

Just a thought tho. There are a lot of expensive plastic / fibreglass bits on faired bikes & as learners we do some pretty stoopid things............. un-faired bikes = less damage $$.

You could always upgrade to a nicer 250 sports item later on or when you get your 6R.

Don't skimp on the gear !

or if you have some riding experience and want something sporty in your price range, the suzuki rg150 could be a goer, dont be fooled by its modest capacity cos theyve got plenny of trouser action capabilitie!!
I started with an RG150. My mate had an old CBR400 which I had no problems keeping up with. Good cheap learners bike, good amount of power and cheap to run.

Anything's better than these stupid little mini choppers that I have hooning around my street every friday night. Stupid 43cc toys.

I think I'm going to go for a Honda CB250, their pretty nice, and you can always trust a Honda for a lifetime of fun.

Ladies, if a man says he will fix something, he will fix it. You don't need to keep reminding him every 6 months
