for some reason on the American ADVriders they're going apeshit over it, but for the life of me I can't see what it offers over KLR/DR except twin disks and fuel injection. Looks are a pretty subjective thing, I think it looks like a praying mantis. The dual downpipes wouldn't last long in rocks, water pump sticks out waaay to far and too low. For the price premium I would have expect USD forks, alloy or plastic tank, good HP and torque, etc,
why would you buy one of these at $12k plus, when you could have a KTM?
it's not a bad thing till you throw a KLR into the mix.
those cheap ass bitches can do anything with ductape.

    I wouldn't.
I'd have a well farkled DR650 and something like an XR400 as well.

Ideally I'd end up with an Africa Twin and a 350-400cc thumper.

Or you could buy an old 86 Tenere with the same power, around 48hp,less weight at 175kgs wet,23 litre tank and it's strong enough to probably withstand a nuclear blast. Then spend lots $$ making it good again(with a lot of frustration inbetween) and ta da,you have a classic big trail/adv bike.
Oh wait, that last line is what I've done

I actually think the new Tenere looks way better than a KLR, but you're dead right, there's not much more in it. If I wanted a mid-weight adv tourer right now I'd be looking hard at an 800GS, none of the other bikes in that class have made any major improvements to weight, power or offroadabilty since about 1987. $$$$$ though.

If I was buying my current object of lust right now, the KTM690E, I'd be thinking strongly about importing one from the states, they work out to about NZ$11500 over there vs $16K here! A man could jet over, buy one, go touring for a month, ship it back & come out not far shy of even.

    Cheers
    Clint

What an excellent idea Clint! I wonder when, and if, they will make an Adv version of the 690. I have seen no mention of it on the web yet.

However the only problem buying one in the USA is getting a right hand drive version

Quasi I hear you are getting rid of the KLR. Any reasons why? What's the next one?

No reason other than Im getting a BMW800 , well thats the plan. The KLR has now done 15,000 kms and its a brilliant bike in every aspect, and perfect for its intended purpose, I love the 425kms range !

But I have plans a foot and I have always wanted the BMW to excecute them
