Not a wives tale, it's the approaching fronts out in the Tasman. The lead in to the front is the high level cloud. As the cloud gets lower (alto stratus), it will look like looking through frosted glassIf the wives tales are correct, there's a storm a-comin'!

sadly its most often caused by pollution/smog thin layers of such trapped between diferent temprature pockets of air...is cause by other reason from time to time...can't remeber totally what they are....must suck breathing in the air up there!!
