If you want a ZXR250, Double that amount. And then add some more for gear.

welcome monkey the old learner bike question eh?? it all depends on your skill and confidence levels. if your an absolute beginner go for a gn250 or 200-250cc dual purpose bike ie;yamaha xt225 or 250, suzuki dr200 etc etc
or if you have some riding experience and want something sporty in your price range, the suzuki rg150 could be a goer, dont be fooled by its modest capacity cos theyve got plenny of trouser action capabilitie!!

Yea that 2500 is my budget just for the bike.. I have taken into account that I need gear and what not.. Im not looking for something thats flash.. Because I am only a learner and will probably drop it.. lol

I would rather get a sporty 250 just because I would like to have a bike I can keep learning on if that makes sense..

makes sense to me. unfortunately to get a pretty good one might cost a bit more than that. better a lower spec sound bike than a cheap rocket thats on its way to destruction.

    good luck with the search.

If $2,500 is your budget then forget a 4 cylinder 250. If you do manage to get a 4 cyl 250 for that money be prepared to spend about $3,000 to get it working again. Your modest budget will get you a modest bike but if you look after it properly you will find that it is an investment.

Here's a very good bike if you could stretch your budget.

Just keep an eye on trademe and something will pop up. I got my CBR for $2,700, my mate got a 91 Bandit with low k's for $3,000. You just gotta keep an eye out and get in quick.

I'Ve just bought a 1980 Suzuki GSX250 for my son to start off on, good solid bike not over powerful and once he puts a few kms behind him. Im sure I'll get more than I paid for it. Also try and get some lessons from a experienced rider

too troo rocket, much better to buy something sound and original than a 20yr old multi cylinder 250 thats been rolled bowled and arseholed then rolled again lol.
also monkey often the cheaper sports 250s are a bit fickle when it comes to reliability as they age, carb daiaphrams, slides, exhaust packing, carb balancing, electrical problems all start to rear their ugly heads lol
but dont let me put you off, bcos a well sorted one will be a lot of fun

    Full service history
    Good tyres (Pirelli City Demons)
    Very good overall condition

iv had a few cheap bikes under 2 grand. In my opinion its better to maybe spent a bit more, say 4 grand, and you will have a much nicer more reliable bike and wont get nearly as mainy head aches. Esspecially with 4 cylinder bikes.
