    NC30 VFR 400-750 coversion?

    The thought crossed my mind as I'm sure it has with many NC30 owners, what if my 400 was to double in displacement? just putting it out there, wondering if anybody had ever attempted putting a vfr750 donk in their 400, or if anybody has any ideas or information that may help me deside wether to undertake this feat. And if anyones wondering why i don't just buy a bigger bike, answer is; A. it won't fit in the small gap under my house; B. I enjoy a good project and C. I love my NC30 to bits. Fire away.

    Would be a good project but i would think the motor would be too wide to fit in the frame..theres not much room there as it is. Then you would have to try and squeeze the bigger airbox and carbs, radiator in etc.

    Have you had a look at 400greybike.co.uk? From what I've seen & heard it's an absolute arseload of work.

    Personally I'd rather have a big bore kit, cams etc... get near-on 80hp without any weight penalty.

    Also consider that if you use a VFR750/800 motor (as opposed to the RC30 motor) then the sound of the motor will change, due to the 180deg firing order of the VFR750/800 motors as opposed to the 360deg firing order of the NC/RC30's.

    Anything is possible, but are you prepared to throw oodles of time and $$$'s at it.
    The value of your bike as it is, is possibly worth more than a "bitser / bastardised" bike.

    The original 86 vfr750 motor is a peach (a genuine 100 ponies, sounds wonderful, oodles of torque everywhere, bumbproof, screw and locknut to adjust valves, 50mpg...why the hell they can't make engines like this now I dunno....I even prefer it to my 748r's engine) but you're talking major surgery to fit it in there, it's wide and has an oil cooler as well as the large radiator. 80bhp vfr400 = hand grenade. Best save your pennies for an Rc30

    My NC30 is probably going to stay with me until the day one of us dies, probably due to the other one. I have been thinking of getting a VTR1000 SP1 motor when the current engine dies. Better yet, get another NC30 chassis so I don't have to wreck my one and can go back to the old motor if I attempt this before it breaks down. So far the majority of money I've spent on the bike has been on the chassis so it'll be good to use it as a project.

    Only problem with this is you'll loose the beautiful V4 sound. Hopefully it'll retain the camgear whirr, though I haven't heard a SP1 in person yet to see if it's as strong as the 400's whirr. And I've thought if it turns out well I'd get Ohlins and various other bling for it and then though why not just get an SP1 in the first place...


    Think I saw your VFR going through the bike parks at the boxing day races. Awesome colour scheme, it was the one I was after until the custom black frame one I've got came up.

    Yea probably was my mine. I waited a long time for one in this colour scheme to pop up (about 18 months) but was worth the wait. Had a good look round the net and it looks like an engine conversion of this nature will require some pretty brutal frame butchery due to engine dimensions, and generally just isn't worth the effort/$. Cheers for the feedback anyway
