    bloody Honda's

Have taken my CBR600 through for a WOF and its been kicked out The front brakes have been sticking, he sent me away told me to clean up pistons and bring it back. Did this, betterbut still not flash, if you jack front wheel off ground and spin the pads rub on disc. Now seems to only rub on one side (one disc hotter than other) left it with him and he had a look at it, while I took a VTR1000 for a test ride. When I got back, he told me it needed a new front brake caliper bracket

its the bracket that the caliper slides onto and the bracket bolts onto the fork lleg. Now if you can read parts catalogue, you will notice that you can't actually buy this bit on its own, you have to buy complete with the caliper !!
$500 + ex Japan no doubt. Why? Honda, mate.....
I'm a bit pissed by this, as the brakes are the same as VINZ wof when bike reregistered and same shop gave wof no problems six months ago.
So....do I take bracket off and get it straightened? He wasnt too keen on this and wants to see S/H bracket if I get one.
Take it somewhere else for a wof?
Try ebay? well, have emailed a few sellers if they will ship to NZ but still looks like I'll have to but complete caliper.
Will also try some NZ and Oz wreckers, unless someone on here has a spare bracket? L/H side...

fix it, get a wof, and sell it.....cos i will guarantee that the next one will fail soon, honda logic.
been there done that.....in the end you spend heaps of time and effort to get your honda perfect, then you will have it ritten off by some cage sorry im still a littel bitter

Apparently its bent, well slightly twisted, so when caliper sits on disc, its not sitting exactly flush.

I would have thought because the calipers "float" they wouldn't be "flush".

Something about because the pins didnt line up or something? Main problem seems to be the pistons dont release pressure on the pad, so it keeps rubbing on the disc, but he pulled the caliper apart and said the pistons were fine, no problem. I'm not 100% convinced he's right, actually. He tapped the caliper with a rubber mallet before pulling them apart, and the piston released OK and wheel spun nice and freely, pump the brakes a couple of times and then the pads dragged again. I think the fault is more in the caliper than the bracket. I'll be well pissed if I find another bracket and it doesnt cure the fault.

Know anybody else with your model??
You could do a swap for a test.
You also might be able to shim the bracket to a better position.
What ever,it sounds like typical replace instead of fix BS to me.
At lest get a second opinion from a GOOD bike tech.

Yeah, don't try and bend the ally bracket,it will break - now if not later when you are riding it.Don't bleat about a WoF check finding a fault in your brakes...jeez mate, that's what it's all about, saving your bloody neck!

Try Malcolm Kirby at Econohonda. He'll do either the bracket or the caliper assembly for a LOT less the the ex-Japan price, and may even source the exact same part from a different Honda.

Worth a shot. Malcolm knows about every Honda off by heart.

What year and model of cbr600 is it? A guy on ebay was selling his whole F4 model for parts (and prob making a fortune cos to make a bike from spare parts would cost about a million bucks).

They are standard nissan calipers and used on many bikes. I'm told the middle three letters of the part numbers tell you what bikes it was used on, so likely you can get parts from the breakers.

Too me its unlikely that the caliper bracket bends unless some noob as tried a wheelie with the front disc lock on. However, the pins that go thru the pads bend easily - so check that first.

I have the F2 (Fn) that uses the same design and I champher my pads (where the pins go thru) as with that design the pads stick and dont free up properly - hence the rubbing on the disc.

Its also a common problem from fitting the wrong thickness pads - HH do it quite often because race pads are normally thicker and softer than OEM.

Yep, the Honda centre code, for this its MAL which is only for the CBR600FV, its a 1997. Typical. Hey TwoSeven, are you referring to the pins marked 9,10 & 11 in that parts diagram?
I hear you Motu, but why arent the WOF standards better applied? Honestly this bike has probably done less than 1 000 kms since previous WOF, now its a problem
Hey Stevo, yeah theres a guy parting out an F3 same as mine but wont ship outa USA, I've emailed him though. Did you see the complete front end off a 2004 CBR600RR for about $150US no reserve? put in a bid, but someone must have higher reserve than what i bidded, I emailed him, he reckons $135US to ship out here.
Hey Jim2 have looked on Econohondas site, he hasnt any parts suitable listed, but will email him as well, thanks
