Iridium spark plugs

Hey guys,

I'm thinking a bit too much, would putting Iridium sparkies into a motorbike make it run better? I threw a set in my Pulsar with no difference in power, perhaps you'd be able to notice a difference in a motorcycle. yeah their twenty bucks a pop, but if they improve the engine why not?

Note, these would be replacing standard Hyosung sparkies.

The performance of the iridium plugs would be improved over the standard plugs, especially if the old plugs have done a few 000ks. I doubt you would notice a lift in performance or economy unless the old plugs are really poked. Iridium plugs will last alot longer than standard plugs (60000km) so if you are keeping your bike or just like to have the best these are the way to go.

Believe it or not standard plugs can last that long too. Depends on the type of riding you do. Gerties only had two standard plug changes in 120,000kms +.

Iridium has a lower resistance than other plug materials so if your ignition system voltage is a bit dodgy, then in theory at least, it's easier to get a good spark but that's not a good reason for using them. As already alluded to, the biggest reason to use iridium plugs provided they meet the recommended heat range for your vehicle is that of wear. Iridium is an extremely hard material, probably 4 or 5 times greater than standard plugs. My 'bird came fitted with iridium plugs. I changed them as a precautionary measure at ~60000 km. There was absolutely no sign of wear and the gap hadn't changed so as far as my experience goes, they certainly deliver in terms of life. As plug changes on an injected 'bird takes 1-2 hours of fiddly work, not having go pull them out for gapping or changing has got to be good!

Coppercoat the threads... after an extended period without being changed, you dont want to pull the thread out of the head when you remove the plugs at a later date!

I've got Iridium plugs in my FJR. It's hard to tell how much difference they make, as they went in at the same time as the TBRs went on, the DNA filter went in and the EMU was adjusted. While the combined result is impressive, I don't know which bits made the biggest contribution. Another reason to make changes incrementally, I guess.

I've read a lot about Denso Iridium plugs on the Kawasaki Z1 forum and also the Honda SOHC forum. Everyone recommends Denso, and the NGK's come in at second best. The results are smoother running and idle, less smoke, more power, the whole nine yards. These plugs are especially recommended for older bikes such as the Suzuki GT750, Kawasaki Mach III, Honda CB750 etc. Here is a link to Denso. I intend fitting them. The Christchurch agent is Miles Toyota. They aren't cheap, $32 each excluding GST and shipping from their Palmerston North warehouse.

I just put iridium plugs into my rs250, with a new airfilter as well
I can feel a bit more power and have taken back acceleration over my mates freshly rebuilt NSR
at first I didnt notice any real difference but after about 2 weeks they bedded in and run real nice... bout 6 weeks old now..
The other thing that has changed is my fuel economy... almost doubled and thats still thrashing so I guess its running more efficient now that It can breathe and has better spark

In saying that, the standard plugs I was running were about a year old, and Id never ever fowled one or had a reason to take em out, thats pretty good for a 2 stroke..
