Shipping a Cub from Chch

Hi folks,

Finally got me a Honda Cub C50 for my sister (and me to thrash and fiddle with). Paid too much, but I've been getting impatient.

Anyway, the bastard's in Christchurch. Seller reckons getting it up via rail is the best way to do it. So who would that be? I've no idea how the system works. Any other ideas regarding shipping?

Oh, also, if anybody's got any bits (e.g. leg shields, single seats etc.) do let me know. Any suggestions for good tyres? Brake shoes?

Shipping via rail would probably be an easy option, but have you looked at motorcycle movers? Not too sure on the prices, but I have sent cars from Chch to Akld via rail and they cost $500 from station to station.

This is the number for Toll Rail freight 0800 351 351, I'm pretty sure they are the guys I have dealt with but will check tomorrow.

If you need someone to collect it in Chch and drop to station, I can help!

Get it sent with a freight company is probably the cheapest, or a moving company thats heading this way would be even better

All you people needing bikes transported here, there and everywhere ... I can't understand why you don't ride 'em ... how tempted I am to start a bike-riding service around the country. Bit expensive in petrol, I guess, but what a fun thing to do.

Biketranz is likely to be the best option - but will probably set you back close to $400...

Nah, stuff that. That's the price of the bike

It's a rusty old Honda Cub. Doesn't quite need the tender loving care of a brand new CBR600RR in terms of shipping.

Will investigate a few options tomorrow.

The seller has offered to drop it at the depot and sort it all out, so hopefully I won't need to ask for your help.

My C50 runs a Cheng Shin front and a IRC 4ply rear. These are the cheapest toughest tyres ever. They never wear and when I bought it, the previous owner had 9psi in it. I wouldn't recommend it but the sidewall was tough enough to support the weight of the bike. Not sure where you can get those these days. My first place to call would be a scooter shop.

With regards to brake pads, I got a set from the local Honda dealer. Cost like $20 front and rear. You'll love it.

I'm thinking about doing a top end rebuild on mine soon. Smokes a bit and not too fast.

They were indeed. There were a crop of them, then they all disappeared going into winter. It shouldn't be too bad, I want to have it shipped, brought up to ridable spec, repair the seat and paint it (I have means and ways) and have it all under $1000

Thanks mate! That's a great site. I plan to get a workshop manual ASAP. Not too fussed about how tough the tyres are, more looking for something really grippy, especially in wet weather. My sister hasn't ridden a bike (or car) before, so I don't want any `moments'.

there was one on at $850 also in chur chur which I think would have been better value... but you dont want to hear that.

what you might want to hear is that one of the guys who bought one of my CB400F's used a Co. called Horizon, based out of Hamiltron to pickup in chur chur and deliver to Aucks. according to the driver he paid $250 which is just over half what one of the specialist bike transporters would charge ($400/450).

might be worth a call.

I tried that number above for Toll, they told me to call two other numbers -- one of which didn't work (it was for stuff that wasn't full container-sized) and the other number was for AutoTranz; the guy there said there was a dry-dock or summat so they couldn't do it.
