Oh shit - that's gonna cost...

OK - I know that polls on insurance have been done before - but this one has a twist

Primarily - this is for folk who choose NOT to have insurance.

Lets assume that you have an "at fault" accident - how far would you be willing to go to "make good" for the other owner (assuming significant damage of $20k excluding your bike).

    1. I have insurance so its not an issue for me
    2. I can drop 20k and would do it immediately
    3. I cannot afford 20k but would use cash, sell whats left of my bike /other assets and arrange finance to cover the rest.
    4. 20k would be a real financial problem for me and they would have to take me to court to get the money off me at $20 per week
    5. Id do whatever I could to get out of paying

Nice take on the insurance issue, a lot of people wonder why their premiums for a cheap vehicle or for third party insurance is so high. Accidents do happen where the rider is at fault (*gasp*) and wind up doing $50,000 worth of damage with their $2,000 bike. Personally, I have insurance, but if I didn't I'd do what I could to make it right if I was in the wrong.

Having been in that position (not now) They took me to court - Disputes Tribunal. I maintain that I wasn't at fault but the judgement went against me. I owed $4k. No right of appealling the decision except on procedural grounds. They can now enforce those orders but the winner has to go through the courts for collection.

The question you're asking though is, would I pay if I was at fault and could afford it? Yes. IF I was at fault.

Third party insurance costs me around $23 per annum

Thats less than what it takes to fill the tank

Why would you not have it?

( I dont have full accident cover because of the cost)

Ever since the day that mr hellkat (uninsured to drive a car at the time) was literally only moving my car from one space to another on the street outside my house, and accidentally pranged a Porsche, which ended up costing him £400 in cash for a TINY LITTLE DING ... I've advocated the benefits of motor vehicle insurance.

I am still reeling from discovering the fact that you aren't legally obliged to have even third-party insurance in this country. I had to drive my dad's car back from his work the other day, and was pleased to discover that under their general works vehicle policy, I'm covered to drive it.

Have Insurance but if i choose not to, 20k would be a huge problem for me. Rather have it then not. Costs me $550 yr for full but will change to 3rd party when bike is not as valuable. At least have 3rd because the insurance company may help even if it goes to small claims. which it did with me. she was at fault but made me out to be a bad uni student who was driving reckless so she got off and the only reason she did that was because of the insurance company telling her to. i just stated the facts and got for it.

Even if I didn't have comprehensive insurance I'd want third party. If I was at fault without it, then I don't know what I'd do, and I don't even like thinking about it. Riding un-insured is not an option.

I've got full insurance, but I ticked the last box... no matter what the circumstances, I'll do my best to get out of paying. No way I'll admit fault, even I was at fault. There's every chance I'll be able to cheat my way out of paying the excess so I've gotta at least try!

Dunno where I fit in the poll,so didn't do it.I've run uninsured for decades without problems - the only time I was in an incident where the damage was my fault I offered the insurance company about half what they wanted cash, and they took it.

As most of the vehicles I've used have had practically no monetary value it has been hard to get even 3rd party at times,so running with no insurance is not often my own choice.I only have one uninsured vehicle at the moment, and as it's not registered under my name I'll just step out and walk away.

I've always taken the view that I'm responsible for any damage I do to other vehicles.....this makes me a little more cautious than fully insured people on the road I suspect....like who cares,it'll all be done for me.A few years ago I plowed my Pajero into the side of a near new Falcon who decided he could make a new lane on the inside. He just shrugged his shoulders as we exchanged details, and then drove off.Next week he took it to the panelbeaters and got a courtesy car for a week....no big deal, there is no need for him to be responsible.

If I hit someone elses' vehicle they better be insured. If someone hits MY vehicle, they better be insured LOL.

It's not about insurance, or who is right and wrong, its about how much of an asshole you want to be. If you want to sit and cry, then sit and cry. If you want to bash the fucker until you get paid, then do it.

    HTFU and dont cry.

Hmmm, Unless you never go out it's more like when you have an accident not if.
All you can do is make sure you give yourself the best possible chance to walk away.

I will always have insurance even if it is only 3rd party.
