Well I went into Motorad in Wgtn for some new tyres, having decided on the Trailwings. Found they had the front 19" on the shelf but no rear. So they said they would order one in. Turns out even the importer didnt have one so Dale Mathews, the parts manager, gave me a very good deal on a V-Rubber brand. The tread pattern is almost identical to the Bridgestone (see photo).
He wants me to report back to him on how it goes, he may do a write up on it in Kiwi Rider magazine. So far done about 400ks and no probs - very predictable on grass and gravel (only done small amounts so far) and good on the road. Going (as a guest) on a BMW owners ride this weekend to Riversdale, with an off road section thru forests, so will see how they fare there.
PS have a spare new Clymer manual for F650 94-2000, anyone want?

The rear is on backwards if you value traction over braking. The front is OK.Originally Posted by Motu
I've just done 2000km on a Pirelli MT90 AT rear, nice on the road & wearing well, not quite as good as the MT-70 on gravel. I think I prefer the MT-70 for my bike & riding style.

I'm amazed how much grip the Conti TKC80 is giving on the road.
I've got the 150/70/17 on the rear and a Pirelli MT-70 Corsa 120/70/17 on the front.
They seem to combine nicely, nice and nutral handling.
Very funny you guys - you created sufficient doubt that I had to go down to the shed and double check - and yes, there is a direction arrow on the tyre AND IT IS ON THE CORRECT WAY! And so it should be as I paid the local bike shop to fit them, as I wanted it done in a hurry to go on the Hitcher New Tyre Ride. (And at $10 a wheel, its hardly worth doing myself.)Originally Posted by Motu

Well, the rear LOOKS like it's on backwards - but if the arrow says it's correct then that's the end of the argument (no argument, just gentle stir up) My IRC rear looks wrong to,and I see some cars tyres that are the reverse of what you'd think. The manufacturer knows a little bit better than us.
