7 day open bike shops?

Decided to go bike shopping yesterday (thats a sunday, chaps). First stop was Barrys Pt road.. all of them closed, pikers.

Plodded over to Wild West Honda, and low and behold they were open. Friendly bunch too... had a nice 1hr test ride

If the bikeshops on B.P. Rd actually knew how many people stopped and peered through their window on a Sunday, they might consider it.
Every time I have been past, there has always been at least one person with their face up against the glass.

Yep, everytime I go to Cycletreads on a Sunday there's always atleast one person at Holeshots... kinda funny really.

I can usually make it to WWH just after I finish work if I high tail it a wee bit.

Or I could just wait till the weekend.. but who has time?!


I have no problem with the bike shops closing when they do.. I reckon on Sundays you'd just get shite loads of joy riders, people who might take a day off during the week would be more likely to actually buy something. That is, if you're talking about buying an actual motorbike.

For just bike gear.. there's heaps of gear shops open during the weekend. And WWH and Cycletreads both do warrents and repairs and what not during the weekend aswell, actually there busiest time.. Saw about 30 odd bikes crammed in WWH one weekend, impressive sight.

It will come if you moan enough.Then the shops will be staffed by part time workers on minimum wage as the shops don't bring in enough income to pay full time staff.Then you will moan about the inadequate staff.....

I do agree that times have changed in retail, unfortuntally we are trying to be like retail in other countries but we donot have the population or disposable income like they have, to support 24hr 7 days aweek shopping.

I Work most saturdays, I dont mind bike shops keeping the hours they do, we all like a day off, and its good if ya mates are having the same day off, ie sunday.

Business is business, if they choose to close on sunday their financial loss someone elses gain.

Personally I think its a good thing that they close as I was always taught sunday is a day of rest. Nice to see smaller businesses still follow ex traditions and values compared to big impersonal corporate companies.

I don't really see the point of 7 day trading at all - society suffers far too much and for what??

There's always one sad ass with his nose pressed up against the glass like a four year old at the candy counter. Often the sad ass is me, each new release of the Gixer1000 and 750, and the latest Hayabusa, I stood for a while, staring in. The 8mm creates a useful barrier, if they were open and I was that hot under the collar, I'd be a lot broker.

Two online shops aren't really helpful - you can't talk to someone face to face, .

You're in Welly, so are we and one of our more pleasurable Sunday's is up to Palmy for brunch (usually George St) and a visit to ANZA. So far, they win. We have bought over $1,000 worth of gear off them in the last 2 months and some more in January - on a Sunday. So they're not mail-order, far from it.

Think about it, bike shops are proabably the only retail business sector not open 7 days now. Even the banks (usually ASB) are open on Sundays in the malls.

Oh ... and we ALWAYS make a point of telling the staff, while they swipe the card, to mention to the boss that we made the trip especially from Wellington just because they were open Sunday. We also thank them for personally being there on a day they would rather not be. Then of course, part 3 of the obligatory trip is to the Cuba St cafe where you will usually find other KBers having coffee - last time it was Ynot Slow, 86GSXR, SarahTvet and a couple of others whose names I have forgotten (sorry)

It's interesting that a shop that is open in a smaller centre gets the business that people are willing to make the trip for. Yes, it's only one customer, but how many people won't/can't make the trip but want to make purchases? There are no motorcycle shops open on Sunday in Wellington which has a fairly large population base. If the shops are worried about their bikes being taken out solely for joy rides then they have the right to restrict them. But isn't that the idea of test rides? So people will either but the bike or tell their friends about it?
I hope at least bike shop does trial Sunday trading (with the advertising to go with it - yes it all costs money but so does being in business)

I suppose we should take this opportunity to acknowledge one shop that is/has? tried something a little extra. I'm not sure of the exacrt times but Motomart have opened extended hours in the evening (not sure about mornings) so that customers can pick their workshopped bikes up after work.

I wonder whether as long as they are united bike shops dont lose much by not being open. If all their competitors are open and theyre not obviously theyll lose business but if noone is open the customers will just have to come back another day in which case their weekly sales wont drop that much, theyll just be slightly busier on the days they are open.

In saying that though, its rather frustrating not being able to go in on Sundays. Pretty much every other shop is. From a non retail point of view my mum works every second weekend and loves it, it allows her to do all her doctors apointments etc when theyre actually open....plus for a biker Id imagine the roads would be quieter on a Tuesday than a Sunday.

Motomart tried the Sunday thing a couple years ago and NOONE came in...
And I really mean 0 people!
It cost more to open for the day than we would make.

We are open till from 7.30am till 6.30pm during the week. And open till 3pm on Saturday. So gives people that extra time to come in and get what they need.

I have worked on Sunday. IT SUCKS THE BIG ONE!
So I will not choose to work on a Sunday. I enjoy my free time
