Recommended places to stay with bike?

Don't know if this has been posted before, more than likely. I was planning my first trip away from Auckland. Just a wee overnighter. being a newbie I'm a bit worried about bike security when you stay overnight. Have disc lock and chain but wondered what others on site do and if they recommend some motels etc that are biker sympathetic

At motels, as for a disabilities-modified room. They generally have a ramp and wide-opening door. Park the bike inside.

You may want to specify where, otherwise:

The Americano Motor Inn (or something like that) in Picton is excellent. They even offered their garage for my bike and another girls, then parked a car up against it.

There is a hotel/pub in Greytown I think? about an hour and a half out of Wellington, near Carterton I think? on the main drag, left hand side, on the corner of a side street as you head north. They got me to put the bike all the way round the back, behind a gate and everything. The locals were highly entertaining too, and spent a very enjoyable evening there.

More generally, a lot of motel owners are quite accomodating, and seem to make special effort, if they can. Could even pay to ask before booking?

Littlewheels does make a good point. Would it be useful to have a register of bike friendly motels/hotels around the country for easy referral that could be updated as need be? Or am i just being silly (I have my moments)?

naw, make some friends on KB and go see them !! crash on their couch, miss.. Sooo many fun people to meet. You're only there one night, so you can decide if you ever want to come back

How far were you planning on riding ?

In answer to your question, I would say most motels will look after you admirably. If they are particularly UNHELPFUL then a mention on KB might provide a little prod for them, haha.

and good motels in talpo?>??? im going up there in ausust 8th for a weekend some were bike safe would be good also on slightly other note im leaving from welly if anyone feels the need to tag along for a day ride up more than welcome to join the fun.. just flick me a pm fomr

I usually ask about security when I book and then again on checking in. Some motel owners will point out the safest spot to park, one parked his car beside the bike so nobody could get at it. Most will be helpful if asked.

I always ask when booking what security is like, is the parking hidden from view from the road, etc. We've often been offered the use of a garage overnight.

They sure will. I run such a business in New Plymouth. If you are down this way you are welcome to stay with us & park your bike next to mine which is blocked in by my car making it rather tuff to get at
