Number plate position?

Hi all,

My question is that is it illegal to place the number plate right towards the inner end of the tail, between the swing arms?? Seen a few bikes with them but not sure if its allowed or not..

By the way, the bike in question is a ZX10R 06, so the tail tidy thing isnt gonna work as the plate wont fit between the mufflers...

My question is different mate, my plate will be horizontal but kind of tucked in the tail, where the swing arms start,

Pretty much... your luck will hold out for some time... then some cop will pull you up, and you will probably get done for it. Or you'll get into some other trouble, and then have that tacked on.

The question is whether or not it can be seen, and whether or not you have put a license plate light on it (although it isn't commonly mentioned, it is still a requirement).

And yes, the plate can, ahem, fit between the pipes, with a little "plate modification". All numbers should be untouched, as I have seen this done, just have to cut it quite close to the letters. Yes, its technically illegal to modify/cut the plate at all (this actually includes bolt holes, but they let it slide for obvious reasons - typical nz law makers).

Question I guess is, how much of a hassle do you want to make it, each time you get done for it? If you do go down the path, make sure it can be completely and easily seen from behind the bike, at say, car level (ie, cop won't instantly spot a problem) and you'll also have to watch out for clearance with the swingarm when it travels. If you get done, you will have to write in, supply pictures, and state that it is clearly visible. Then you're at the mercy of that cop.

(obvious point is... don't get a bike with such ugly annoying pipes)

bugger it... cut the plate.. bend it.. do what ever it takes..

I had mine on a flipping door hinge.. full full from behind.. blimmin obvious it was on a hinge if you had even one eye... never got pinged.. even got wof's with it like that...

Hmmm, after reading all this I have cable-tied the plate between the pipes by folding the edges a little bit just under the tail light.. Looks ok, will try to make a custom tail tidy over the weekend hopefully...

I've seen a 06 ZX10 where the pipe exits were turned 180 degrees and the plate fits between the pipes with a tidy tail...

Apparently the internals are symmetrical, so if you de-rivet the end cap, then unbolt the cans, turn the internals around and re-rivet the caps and refit the bolts, it all works.... Failing that, there are A&R baffles.... http://aandrmufflers.com/ZX10RInstructions.html

mine is tucked up front on my k4,The plate has brackets off the rear footpegs & made a number plate light,We were followed along the motorway by a cop about 3 weeks ago & never got pulled over.
