Hrmm, some cagers really do make me wonder if they are intentionally trying to kill us...

So I'm on my way home this morning, (just got in the door), and driving along St Heliers Bay rd there's a BMW tailgating me. I'm used to it though, we're in a School Zone, there's a bus infront so I just keep an eye on him and keep moving with the traffic.

We get a red light at the intersection about 300m from my house, Bus up front, followed by 2 cagers then myself, the BMW and the rest of the Que.

Light turns green, and I move off with the Que. Bus isn't stopping at the usual stop, but the 2 cages infront of me are turning. 1 parking on the left, the other turning right into the School. I look in my mirror and see the BMW is no longer tailgating me, so he must of been late on the green, but he is still following. I start indicating left well ahead of my driveway as there's lots of parents parked on the side before school, and I'm wary of them pulling out infront of me.

As I start slowing down and pulling left into my driveway, I look over my shoulder and see the stupid fucking idiot in the BMW who got his license in the 99c bin at the warehouse Accelerating to pass me on the left!! Aboslutely nothing I can do now, can't pull to the right as the other cagers are passing me, can't stop as then he will hit me, and can't speed up as I'd most likely spin the back. Fortunately, he decided to ease off the gas (not stop, not swerve, just slow down), and I just made it into my driveway... unfortunately, due the road going downhill along with raised fences, I couldn't get the fuckers plate... Was tempted to chase after him, and get his rego, but with the amount of cars now between us, in a School zone and in the wet I would of likely finished the job he started (kill myself)....

you made the right choice in not chasing... anger can cloud our judgement, which could have got you hit or worse. maybe go to the school, and ask them to put a notice out asking if any of the parents/teachers saw the beemer and managed to get the plate.

Actually that's a good idea! Wouldn't be surprised if there was an outraged parent seeing a reckless driver right outside their child's School....

Sorry i'm a bit confused.....How could he have thought he could pass you on the left and how could you see him in your left mirror speeding up for a left hand overtake if you were in the correct lane position for a left hand turn?

Not in my mirror, I looked over my left shoulder. Call it 6th sense or intuition, who knows, but something in my brain must of said "Remember that idiot tailgating you? Maybe you should check up on him..."

I started the turn from the middle of my lane, and yes the lane is rather wide. Problem is, my Driveway needs to be taken pretty much straight on as there is a rather high curb either side, along with both neighbour's fences and parked cars. If I pull all the way over to the left I actually can't make the turn. In my car, I almost need to hug the centerline to make the turn.

What I think happened was the idiot failed to see me indicating, thought he could pass on the left (ignoring all the parked cars and children off to school), and just went for it.

secondly, the road code suggests.. and its a pretty good one, that should you be tailgated then perhaps you may like to pull over and let tailgater pass.

ALTERNATIVELY, stop in the middle of the road, get of ya bike. Ask tail gater to open window and PLANT one on there chin.

Have had the same happen better than ten times, yep know where you are coming from on this one, when they where there and then disapear look again in your mirror then over your shoulder, good defensive driving skills well used..

Nope, I don't swing out... I indicate, slow down and turn, opposed to drifting across the lane approaching the turn. (For my driveway anyway).

Wasn't in "The left lane" as such... as there was only 1 lane in each direction. But the lanes are wide enough to fit 2 vehicles side by side comfortably.

No, there was no collision, but I've been riding for 3 years now and that's the closest I've ever come to one. To give you an idea, the lane is wide enough that cagers have so much room to pass I can generally slow down further (on my bike or the car) as I enter my driveway as it's rather a steep downhill, and when cars are parked I cant always see if there's kids walking to school about to cross my drive.

The speed he was going, and the fact that he didn't alter his direction at all meant that if didn't see him attempt the pass and slowed as I exited the road, or if he slightly misjudged his closing speed I'd be up in Grafton right now... He missed me by maybe a foot, and judging his speed against the other cagers, would of been going about 60,65 in a 40 School Zone.

So yea, no accident, but with a driver like that on the road, the next biker, cager or pedestrian might not be so lucky.
