Fluoro Vests

If something had been overtaking me on my right, that would have been all she wrote. Turns out (my wife in the pasenger seat had a full and frank exchange of views with the driver at the next red light), that they had seen me, they just didn't give a shit and assumed I'd move. Bearing in mind I was in a car, not a bike and only avoided an acident through pure dumb luck (nothing on my right when I took evasive action), and that they had seen me, being on a bike with a flouro vest on would have made stuff all difference. Again, when I think about what might have happened, it makes me feel a bit sick.

NNNNNRRRRR! That pisses me off so damn much. Should've kicked their window or something. GAAHHRR!!

I don't wear a fluoro vest, and have no intention of doing so, due to the way they look. I don't care.
Like others have said, I ride as if people can't see me and are brain-dead morons, after a couple of brain-dead morons didn't see me. A vest would've made no difference.

Incidentally, at the time I bought my red jacket (which has reflective strips, as do my boots), I was riding some days with the red jacket on (on my all-black bike) and some days with all black gear on. People paid more attention to me commuting when I was all in black, and moved out of the way more, probably because of the threatening appearance. Mind you, in dimmer conditions (like when the brain-dead morons were due for a nap?!?) the black would've been a liability.

i wear ablack parker i dont own leathers...i also wear a green helmet...but dads riding gear is quite bright (i think...)

I found out when my dad was trying to get a vest for me, your only allowed to wear orange vests now as green and yellow fluoro vests are researved for the emergency services

Also, orange is now the new gay colour, huzzah!

Since the bike is big & loud & ORANGE anyway I feel I'm well ahead in the visibility stakes already, but would probably get one if I was commuting in traffic all the time.
I tried to get a white helmet when I upgraded recently but the one I liked didn't come in white.

No,no,NO! don't even think of it,it's a bonus,but don't think for one second that it's going to save your life....cause it won't.

Somehow our wires are getting crossed. I don't think that wearing a fluoro will save my life. If they're gonna hit you they're gonna hit you. Like I said - my 2nd cousin got wiped while wearing reflectives.

But I'd rather wear a fluoro in the dark and rain than not... That extra vis is not for me to rely on (I'm one of those "assume they are out to kill me" riders) but sometimes, just sometimes, you don't notice someone driving at 140 k around the bends between Hunua and Hotel Du Vin, in the dark, and the swerve they make is preeeettttyyyy scary but better feeling than if they'd hit me, cos I was going in the same direction as them, and no jacket would probably have meant death.

I think Light ,color and movement are the key.
I'm more likely to notice a bike coming up behind me if the headlight is flickering/dazzling me in my rear vision mirror.
I like the idea of headlight modulators.

Arctic blue head lights rock.
I see a guy going the other way every day on the way to work,he wears a faded old HIvis vest that you don't see because he's always flat out on the tank anyway,but his Blue head light really stands out.
I know for myself if I'm going to notice anything it will be some thing that's unusual/different.At the moment it's these blue lights.
The other thing I like about them is that they don't tend to blind you if their on full beam.

There's a clean '94 FZR600 still in there, doesn't have the exup or suspension extras, but otherwise idetical appearance wise, a quick paint/vinyl job and no-one would be the wiser...

Just waiting for a couple of Christchurch alumni to have a look at it for me. Kays are a bit high. Not after a custom project, I just want a bike to ride that requires the minimum of fuss to ride. I seriously don't care that it's not a 750, and doesn't have the "flash" bits. It's still a better bike than I'll ever be a rider.

Don't bother - unless you're after bling.
They give you worse lighting, despite the bluish light giving you the illusion of brightness. Plus the human eye isn't too good with the blue colours, so it's not good for night vision.
