1998 R1 With 70,000Km

So im scanning the bike market and notice this '98 R1 thats been on TM for a while...

Its got 70,000Km on it, is this an absolute no-no? Unsure if it has had work done, and if even so, would it still be too much of a risk?

On the other hand theres a '96 Fireblade with 30,000Km going for a similar price...

Like the newer styling of the R1, but get worried by the big 70...

Nah, should be sweet. Heaps of bikes around with well over 70k, mines just ticked over 116k still going strong. As long as it been well serviced there should be no worries. Maybe check out the brakes rotors and things like that that do wear out over time.

That amount of K's is hardly a concern on the bigger capacity bikes.

Servicing (regular) counts. Ask the owner for details.

The mileage isn't as importatn as the condition of components and the overall condition of the bike. If the engine's tired, it'll rattle, blow smoke, or be down on power. Other things are equally obvious: how well it changes gear; are the chain and sprockets 'ted; are the brake disks obviously worn; how the suspension seems. The latter (suspension) is the one thing that's most likely to be tired after 70,000, regardless of how the bike's been treated.

Sure things wear down, and it wont be at full power but it is a 1000cc so it'll still have enough grunt for you. There was a guy who rode an R1 around the world and did all sorts of crazy shit and it still ran ok at the end of it.

If I were you i'd talk to a yamaha mechanic or perhaps check out on the US R1 forums, there are a number of 5star yamaha trained technicians that hang out there and they'll be able to tell you what to look for etc.

At the end of the day you can always talk them down some, and if you state your reasons clearly enough they'll probably be reasonable with you too.

I see what you guys are saying, issue is I guess, that the bike is in Thames & I'm in Welly...

Im a little worried about flying up and finding that those kays have taken their toll!

This has eased my mind a bit about high-milage bikes though, I guess I'll have to consider those closer to home...
