The wait is over, but not what I thought I would buy.

Yes I finally made a purchase. I settled on a 2005 KX250. Yes thats right a MX 2 stroke, the one machine I thought I wouldn't buy again, however after riding it I was surprised at just how smooth the powerband was. Its had a few tweaks done to smooth it out. Has a flywheel weight fitted, timing has been retarded a little (Yes before anyone else says it, the retarded timing will be perfect for the retard sitting on it) I will most likely fit a G2 throttle cam, maybe a Gnarly pipe. But to be honest its nothing like the demon KX 250 I had in the early nineties.

Oh and how do I keep the front wheel on the ground again,

Well done 2-slo.. The last 250 mxer I had was an '89 KX (new), I remember it being a little top endy, but there was still heaps of bottom end for hare scrambles, etc..... Enjoy......

2 strokes seem to have this bad reputation for having no bottom end based on exactly what you mentioned - the "i rode one from the early 90s" sort of experiences, the modern 2 stroke is a completely different machine.

KTM makes a shitload of good trail 2 strokes, and i seem to have no problem getting my CR250R around the trails

Hey BOOOOM do you find the amount of gas your two smoke burns to be an issue? I know two strokes burn through more of the expensive stuff. Do you find you have to be more careful on the longer trail loops?

no, doesnt seem to be an issue, ill use a tank faster than a guy of a CRF250, but thats to be expected, however my one seems to use a noticable amount less fuel than cheese's one over the same distance, unsure why

Its Quite the opposite for me, I find the 2stroke to be much more enjoyable on trail rides than the Modern 4 stroke Equivilant.
The main reason for this is...........TWO STROKES A FREAKIN AWESOME

Don't forget Pierce you cannot compare a 250/2smoke with a 250/4 stroke. You have to compare the 250/2smoker with a 450 if you want to compare two bikes of similar power for their gas comsumtion. A 250/2smoker and 450/4 stroke about 50 or so Horses each!
