As far as I know motorbikes can use all bus lanes except the ones on the motorway. This includeds the little 'B' at traffic lights intended for the bus lanes.

Well, I don't know, but just because a policeman in a car didn't flinch when a HD rider did it doesn't mean it is right.
It probably meant the Policeman couldn't be bothered with the potential grief of it all.

Will be interesting to find out.

I know we can use bus lanes in some areas though.

I'd say probably not since many cycle lanes follow (or include) pedestrian walkways, (i.e. through public parks ect). Still I can't find any specific rules regarding it.

I use them anyway (I ride near the uni everyday, where there are well marked cycle lanes that bypass most of the trafic, this is on the road BTW ). If I get pulled up for it I'll plead ignorance. "well its a bicycle lane isn't it. Bi - two - Cycle - wheels, I've got two wheels"

To back up what sefer says, no you cannot use cycle lanes, if you do and the cop can be bothered chasing you down its a $150 fine and I believe INCLUDING a careless driving charge. Thats what was told to me on one of my lane splitting manouvers that went wrong.

Can any law enforcers on this forum confirm this?

It can't be an infringement and a careless charge for the same offence. It's one or t'other.

Have to check my road code

I'm sure I read in there that you can ride in the bus lanes.
Better have a look, and maybe better stop riding in the bus lane.

Perhaps the confusion here is because Auckland City combines its BUS lanes with its BIKE lanes. In Auckland City you can definitely ride a motorbike in the bus lanes (and go when the 'B' light comes on). But a lane that is dedicated to bikes (not bus/bike combined) means only the non-motorised variety.

By the way, the rules are different on the motorway. I'm just talking about the arterial routes like Dominion, Sandringham, Mt Eden, Great North etc.

In Dunedin the left hand portion of many roads and one way lanes have recently been marked off as a bike lane. This is the area where I would usually filter past stationary traffic backed up at lights and the like. If I can't use the bike lanes, then I can no longer filter unless I ride between lanes......
