No true, the cams can be shimmed up to some degree after you have planed something.
I understand the gears were a response to big bang engines eating whatever system was being used to drive the cams. The force required to open all those valves at once is more than the regular amount of force that is required of a cambelt than that operating the camshafts in a regular firing order.
But kinda retarded because the VFR400s, RVF400, CBR250RR (And CBR400? Dunno) were never big bang anyway. Nor the consumer targeted VFR750s/800s. And then there were the SP-1/2s, which were also gear driven.
Maybe it was just some weird 'racing heritage' shit marketing forced on the designers? Or perhaps somewhere, hiding in the most secret bowls of HRC are all the bits needed to convert these engines, and available if you know the part numbers.
