I can pinch the budget real hard and pay $900 new, plus a screamer and cost of installation, for the radar detector du jour, the Beltronics STi (or $660-ish plus the hassle of getting it back from the USA), or I can look for something cheaper and/or secondhand from one of the reputable brands, like the Beltronics RX65, a model which I've been assured is 'pretty good'.

Frankly, if it wasn't for the demerit points angle, I wouldn't consider a $1,000-ish radar detector worth the hassle. A grand pays a lot of speeding tickets.

However, I'm about to endure a three-month licence suspension and don't want to endure another one in the future. You can't put a dollar value on not having to use the pushbike every day.

Now, I know that plenty of you have had good experiences with radar detectors. My question is, though, have any of you ever had a radar detector, of any brand, fail to save you from a ticket?

If so, what were the circumstances, and do you think a more expensive model might have saved your arse where the one you had didn't?

PS: A certain KBer fuckin' well owes me about ten pints, and they know who they are.

Get the Bel STi-XR, the Bel STi-R, or the Escort Passport 9500ci

these are the only ones that cannot be detected by the pigs radar detector detectors including the much lauded Spectre IV

that way you'll be able to evade the bastards when and if they make em illegal

read this blog, he's probably the premiere expert:
    http://veilguy.blogspot.com/

You can get the Bel STi on that un-nameable trading site for about 600 smackers: a great investment

If thats an X50 dont be in too much of a rush , I use a beat up old X50 Escort on the bike and a brand spanking STi-XR in the car , there is nothing in it between the two performance wise ( in real life ) .

    Hi
I've just bought one as well, I got my screamer from the states ($99 US) but has a 2.5mm plug for my old RD so haven't tried it with the Sti adapter on the way.

Wrapped with the Sti, 4 alerts on last trip no false ones, picked up one using instant on about 8k away on the Cantabury straights. Another over a hill and round a corner.

And this could be the reason for that:

Escort's latest invention, the all-new PASSPORT® 9500i, has revolutionized the radar detector category again. Its blistering performance is derived from the "World's Best" PASSPORT® 8500 X50, which means it delivers the best protection possible against all speed measuring devices. Escort® has added advanced GPS-powered intelligence, which makes the PASSPORT® 9500i the best performing, quietest and most user-friendly radar detector ever designed.

    True about the X50.
Sometimes mine gives that much of an early warning that you begin to think it`s a false reading!

I would be willing to bet , that given the ST1 Bel came out after the Bel/ Escort Merger that the real guts of these detectors are all very similar. They both have the very useful frequency readout , where once you learn the frequencies you know whats about , ie Camera , Patrol Car or False alarm

yeah, they are pretty much the same detector side of things but with different features added.
the two companies are barely seperate nowadays

My old Bel 950XR still gives lots of warning but we have 2 cars and 3 bikes so it makes sense to update to the new undetectables

    Another option perhaps ?

    These don't look to bad .... ?

    http://www.laserveil.com/whistler/xtr-695/

I think they are quite a lot cheaper than the V1, Sti, X50 ...

Not that I would ever NEED one of these mind you .....

ASHER MOSES = Conman Nick Balgowan

ASHER MOSES is just another alias Conman Nick Balgowan uses from www.radars.com.au

    http://nickbalgowan.blogspot.com/

Sales hurting for Nick Balgowan of http://www.radars.com.au - http://www.tcgindustrial.com.au company name Total Control Pty Ltd .

Nick is trying very hard to get more sales by using scare tactics.
All his radar detectors and Jammers are all detectable. But he denies that.

Bel Sti is the only real 100% undetected unit in this world.
Read through radars.com.au and you will understand what a conman Nick Balgowan realy is. He uses scare tactics to make customers beleive that if you dont buy from Nick, then you are risking buying fakes with no warranty from other websites.

The truth is, there is no such thing as fake radar detectors.
The Radar detector manufacturers in USA know theres no such thing as fake radars. The USA Sellers and distributers know theres no such thing as fake radars.Only a small struggling backyard operation run by Nick balgowan at radars.com.au makes up a story about fake radars, so you can buy from his website.

Be free to buy radar detectors from anywhere else other than from radars.com.au they have a mark up of 500% and all radars from Nick are all detectable by Australian Spectre police detectors.

Buying radar detectors straight from USA is the most sensible thing to do.You don't get ripped off by conmen like Nick Balgowan.

"Nick Balgowan from radars.com.au has a long history of being a conman. His most infamous stunt was in 2006 when he had a Korean company change the label on the worst radar detector on the face of the planet, the Rocky Mountain Radar, to be called the Stealth Ninja! WAAHHHHHH I CHOP YOU! He claimed that the Stealth Ninja was undetectable by the Spectre III RDD when clearly it wasn't. He sucked people out of thousands of dollars for these things when he was bringing them in for about $100AUD. But his hand drawn cartoon of an 80's ninja with a mullet was at least entertaining, I think he did it himself.

Looks like Nick Balgowan is trying the same conman stunt with the Whistlers. You can get these on ebay.com for about $130 bucks or buy them from his dodgy ass for $600?? WTF? Same old conman, a brand new day to scam your money. Beware of this mofo, once he has your money you will never get any support for your asian made piece of crap again. BEWARE of this guy and his many dubious claims. Bad karma is heading his way, don't get sucked our of your money before it hits him hard."

Nick Balgowan getting caught again, spinning shit in radar forums using aliases to try and sell his products.http://www.radardetector.net/forums/72989-post55.html

Nick Balgowan getting caught again using multiple aliases, trying to defame a rival competitor.
    http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=21884

    http://www.radardetector.net/forums/...ck-dealer.html

Conman Nick Balgowan not only posting in world wide forums to lure victims to buy his products, but he even lists his website to a business Directory in Greece. How desperate is that...
    http://www.greece.snn.gr/id_Auto_Accessories/

Note: www.australianradar.com is also one of many websites of nicks.

    http://fortressaustralia.blogspot.co...d-warrior.html

check out Conman Nick Balgowan alias 'boy-racer' telling everyone how great his radars.com.au site is.http://www.ehow.com/how_107478_buy-radar-detector.html

Some of Conman Nick balgowan websites to stay away from:

    http://www.radar-detectors-australia.com.au/
    http://www.nomorefines.com.au/
    http://radardetector.com.au/
    http://radars.com.au
    http://www.antilaser.com.au/
    http://www.laserjammer.com.au/
    http://www.tcgindustrial.com.au/
    http://beatpsoriasis.com/

As you can see Nick Balgowan has tried to also con philippines in his fake scams and marketing scemes.

Detectors are definitely not a licence to travel at warp speed however and probably will give enough warning to allow you to loose 15-20kmh before being in radar range depending on whether you hit the brakes quickly enough. Obviously every situation is different and experienced HPs will choose the radar site to maximise their advantage. Similarly experience with using a detector will teach you where and when its effectiveness may be compromised, so you ride/drive accordingly.

Detectors' best effectiveness is in avoiding those round town concentration lapses that otherwise would result in annoying 10-15 kmh infringements.
The point is therefore on long straights the detection range of a good (I have a Bel RX65) detector is much more than the accurate speed measuring range of a radar unit. The weak point then is where the cop is using instant-on mode and doesn't hit you until he is within range and you are doing warp speed lulled into a false sense of security by your detector.
