    Laptop help - motherboard died!!

My laptop has died and it's out of warranty (always happens when warranty's run out!!) so I need to get a new motherboard. The outfit that has it will replace it with another for $350. I'm shopping around and it's been suggested that I try ebay (about to do that) is there anyone here that may be able help with any other suggestions or help?

    Here's the specs;

The Part numbers for HP NC8000 Compaq are,

    Laptop S/N CNU438F3D4
    Laptop P/N PQ152PA#ABG
    Motherboard S/N UA51MC07WL4 - part number is 345064-001

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

hey man what was happening that made you take it in, mines having problems and I was wondering if it could be something similar, basically when I turn it on it won't start up properly, will load up to the administrator bit where you click on your name to open your profile, then it just loads and loads and loads, and won't bring up the screen etc, was yours doing something similar?

don't forget that if you buy a board off e-bay you are going to have to get someone to fit it, say an hours labour. As someone who repairs laptops, trust me , it aint as easy as doing it to a desktop machine

@Col - probably not that bad a price if you also end up with a warranty on labour+parts

and yea - theres a little bit involved in lappy rebuilds more so than a std pc box mobo swap out.

@firefighter - format and rebuild OS and up. ur machine sounds poked.

I'd rather buy new if I can. The one on offer is a off a busted second hand machine.

Umm..ditch it IMHO. You can get new HP's or Toshibas for about $750 so you'd be bonkers spending that much on a repair. Flog the ram and put the hard drive in an enclosure.

Simplest way is to get a UBCD4Win or a decent knoppix Live/Ubuntu/whatever CD to backup your data before you shag around with your windows installation.

BartPE is a good boot-from-CD option for doing backups and the like, though you do need a working Windows box to build it.

At the risk of sounding a bit dodgy, couldn't you accidentally drop it and claim the insurance?
And I to my motorcycle parked like the soul of the junkyard. Restored, a bicycle fleshed with power, and tore off. Up Highway 106 continually drunk on the wind in my mouth. Wringing the handlebar for speed, wild to be wreckage forever.

Odd, from what he said, it sounded rather trivial to correct without any need to reinstall the OS, though I do accept that if it is virus riddled it could well be easier to format and reinstall.

Send me a PM with your postal details. I can send you a CD that will let you backup your laptop independent of the OS on your HDD. You will need a USB hard drive as well. Else I am around over the weekend.

Anyone on here heard of ShadowProtect?
