count me I'll in try and keep my tyre up this time
Looks like I'll have to bail out on the ride Rosie
Work has got two events happening, and I'm marked down to do both some how
So thats me out. Sorry.
Since I've been working far too hard of late, I had Wednesday and Thursday off work.
I waited for the frost to thaw on Wednesday morning, and sat in the sun overlooking lake Rotoiti for a while, to prewarm myself and my gear.
Armed with 5 litres of extra fuel, some A3 printouts of 1:50 000 topomaps, and a meatloaf sandwich from the Okere Falls Store, I headed out into the unknown.
The topomap doesn't distinguish between legal roads and forestry roads, so I was expecting to be doing a bit of back tracking and exploring during the day.
Surprisingly, almost all the roads I had planned to ride, do actually exist, and have public access. There were some bits I couldn't get through, but I found suitably scenic and interesting detours.
More details to come![]()
Here is the general plan:
For those who wish to stay on Friday night, we will be having Spaghetti Bolognese. I have one (1.5 l) bottle of red wine. Feel free to bring more.
Saturday morning Chef640 will prepare some breakfast, then we will make our leisurely way along some gravel roads to the Okere Falls Store for lunch. Those not staying on Friday, have the option of meeting us at Clint's place in the morning, or meeting at Okere Falls at lunchtime (exact times to be announced later).
After lunch we will make our way through the interesting roads that I was exploring on Wednesday, stopping at Matata to refuel bikes and riders. On the way back to Chez640 we will stop for a dip in some natural hot springs.
Dinner on Saturday night will be bangers-bacon-and-bean casserole, with kumara and potato mash, followed by fruit sponge and cream. We'll have some beer on hand, and there is a general store that sells booze that we will be passing on Saturday evening, if people need additional supplies.
Sunday morning we'll have a leisurely breakfast, and make our way to Okoroire for lunch.
Those who have a modest fuel range (less than 200k's) should carry extra fuel. The area isn't exactly remote, but there aren't too many petrol stations around.
There is no fuel at Okere Falls store, or particularly close to Clint's place, so make sure you fuel up before the ride - Rotorua, and Paengaroa have the closest petrol stations, coming from the South and North respectively.
So, keep registering, and let me know where/when you'll be turning up![]()
Paula is still 50/50 but all going well will most likely meet you at Okere Falls store as will be coming down from Alk Sat morning.
However should Paula have had enough on the ride down would it be ok for her to stay at Chez640 while we wonder the countryside?
Going away, busy?

Hey Rosie, how do I find Clint's place?
Cool. The weather forecast for the weekend is looking good.Paula is most welcome to kick back at the lake house while we are out for the afternoon.
HI mate, see the attached map - it's at Hauparu Bay on Rotoiti, 9km from the SH30/SH5 intersection coming from Rotorua, or 2km from Ruato Bay coming the other way. Look for the house with 919 on it, the driveway starts there & goes back towards Rotorua semi paralell with the road. Go all the way to the end of the driveway, stay left.
Cheers
Clint
Can you please give me an idea of where Okoroire is?

Despite being in a recession I still seem to have a bit too much work to do so you lot enjoy yourselves this weekend, looks like you may actually get a dry one too.
Have a beer for me.
Oooooh, one final point: I rode a 990 today and I'm not sure the DR is quite in the same league. Where's me piggy bank?
