Do NOT stick to the 4000rpm rule. It will prevent the piston rings from seating properly and may ruin your engine. Rev it hard sometimes under load, like going up a hill. Also use engine braking at varying revs. Do not rev it high with no load, like in neutral. Make the first oil change relatively early.

I have done this with my bike and it runs noticably smoother and stronger than when it was new. As far as I know it does not use a drop of oil.

Enjoy your bike and ride safely.

I am not saying you are wrong or anything i am just wondering if that is the case why does it state in the owner manaul that we should not go over 4000rpm untill 800kms.

I know. I am not sure why the owner's manual says what it says.

Have a look at this: http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm

At least that. Just make sure it's under load. NOT revving it up in neutral.

Just been reading up on the net. Its about half and half going hard and going slow. Then some are very complcated like change the oil at 20km, 50km etc

I get the imprestion its probably just as safe to ride normaly and not worry to much as long as you don't thrash it

And don't ride for long periods at constant speed. So Makara and Mangaroa should be great places for giving your new bike a workout.

My Ninja 250R will be here next week, bring it on!! Interesting about the different opinions on breaking it in.. will ask the dealer and see what they recon.. I think I'm one to stick with what the manual says, but have been told by a few people to push it hard every now and then to get the pistons seated.. there's probably truth to both.

Regardless, it's my first bike and only getting my learners next week so can't see myself pushing it too hard for a while anyway!
